"Last Monday a string of amendments were presented to the lower House; these altogether respected personal liberty." -William Grayson, Letter to Patrick Henry, June 12, 1789, referring to the introduction of what became the Bill of Rights". http://www.hk91.com/cgi-bin/quote.pl?william_grayson.

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume II, I--Fathers of the Revolution:
William Grayson was born in Prince William county, Virginia, in 1736, son of Benjamin and Susannah (Monroe) Grayson. His father emigrated from Scotland to Dumfries, Prince William county, Virginia, and his mother was an aunt of President James Monroe. He was graduated from the College of Philadelphia, and studied law at the Temple, London; and began practice in Virginia. On November 11, 1774, a company formed in Prince William county, called the Independent Company of Cadets chose William Grayson for captain, and adopted as their motto Aut liber aut nullus. On August 24, 1776, he was appointed aide-de-camp to General Washington; and January 1. 1777, became colonel of Grayson's Additional Continental Regiment, organized by him. His brother, Rev. Spence Grayson, was chaplain. Colonel Grayson distinguished himself at the battle of Monmouth, when he commanded his regiment in the advanced corps, displaying great valor. During 1780-81 he was commissioner on the board of war; and at Valley Forge he was appointed a commissioner to treat with Sir William Howe respecting prisoners. At the close of the war he was elected a member of the Continental Congress in 1784, serving three years with distinguished ability. In 1788 he was sent to the Virginia convention called to consider the constitution of the United States; and with Patrick Henry powerfully opposed the instrument, and in a letter shortly after declared that the South was destined to become the "milch cow of the Union." He was chosen a senator to the first Congress, which met March 4, 1789, took his seat May 21st, and August 7th was granted leave of absence in order to recuperate his health, but died at Dumfries, Virginia, March 12, 1790. He was regarded as a man of the first order of talent, and was one of the leaders of Congress.

Notes

Aka: Wast. Original Proprietors of Bridgewater, MA, 1645; Francis West/Wast Requested as an enlargement to the west of Duxbury and was so granted Bradford Govr. 1645. "Moved to Bridgewater.

"She m. place and date unknown Francis WAST/WEST and resided with him in that
part of Kings Towne RI which became North Kingstown in 1722/3. No birth or
death date listed for Francis. When Gov. Andros took over the King's Province in 1687, he levied taxes on the inhabitants of Kingstown RI - renamed Rochester. Included in the list were Francis Wast Sr., Francis Wast Jr., and Richard Wast. Only Francis Sr., had a rate, that of 2 shilling 1 pence. The children of this family have been difficult to trace. Francis, Susannah, and Martha remained in the Kingstown RI area. William removed to Newport, RI, prob. aft. the death of his first wife; Clement moved to Charlestown RI, and then disappears from RI records, perhaps moving to Dutchess County, NY; Richard returned to Plymouth and Bristol County, living in Middleboro and Taunton. We have not found Peter, John nor Thomas.

No. Kingstown; No. Kingstown RI Book 1:30."

"Susanna SOULE, Daughter, F. Born on 25 Jun 1642 in Kingston, Plymouth Co MA, Plymouth Co MA, Washington, RI. Susanna died in North Kingston, Plymouth Co MA, Plymouth Co MA, Washington, RI on 14 Nov 1707, she was 65.

Her name disappeared from the records of Duxbury and nothing was known of her fate for many years. Some who were interested in the history of the Soule and who had searched for some recorded item that would prove a clue to her after-life and failed to find such reference, came to believe there was no such daughter and discontinued their inquiries; but at last, some time during the year 1924, a Diary, or Memorandum, was found in an ancient house not distant from Boston that contained her name and proved that she was married to one FRANCIS WEST, who had come from England soon after the first settlement, by whom she had seven sons and two daughters whose names were written down under her own. This discovery caused considerable excitement among genealogists throughout New England at the time it became known, and a full account of the finding with a fac-simile of the page of the Diary on which the family record was written, clearly legible, was published in the Boston Evening Transcript. Continued research may reveal much more concerning her children and descendants. In his will her father had given her "twelve pence," a meagre legacy that was a hint of some disaffection. Her children were named as follows:
I. FRANCIS WEST.
II. THOMAS WEST.
III. PETER WEST.
IV. WILLIAM WEST was married to JANE TANNER, daughter of Francis and his wife (???) Babcock, and had issue--John, Joseph, Benjamin, Thomas, Francis, Hezekiah, Ebenezer, Deborah, Abagail, Jane and Susanna.
(1) RICHARD WEST.
(2) CLEMENT WEST.
(3) JOHN WEST.
(4) SUSANNA WEST was the wife of (???) BARBER and had issue.
(5) MARTHA WEST was married to THOMAS CARD, by whom issue.

Susanna married Francis John WEST, M, in Massachusetts.1 Born in 1645 in Aylesbury, , Buckingham, , England.1 Francis John died in North Kingston, Plymouth Co MA, Plymouth Co MA, Washington, RI in 1692, he was 47."
