Notes

"John Andrew was born near Albany, New York, 13 April 1819. He was one of fifteen children. Truman Luther went to California during the Gold Rush. Luther married and lived in San Jose, California. They had a daughter named Mattie. His sister Mattie Andrew married an Etheridge and they lived in Battle Creek, Michigan.

The Andrew family were of Holland-Dutch descent and so were Eleazer and Hannah Penny who were the parents of Sarah Penny Andrew. William Andrew, Mary Jane Andrew Courtwright who lived in Port Byron, New York, also Mary Andrew Stone who lived in New York City, also Betsy Andrew who died in young womanhood at Mentz, Cayuga County, New York. Then the youngest was Henry Penny who married and had one daughter. In 1917, they were living near Hiawatha, Kansas.

The Penny and Andrew families lived on a farm some miles out from Mentz. Mary Andrew (McGraw ) was born there 21 July 1840. Martha Andrew Bass (Aunt Mat) 4 July 1844, Hannah Andrew Reed, 21 June 1846.

In 1854, Mary, Martha and Hannah, with parents John and Sarah (Penny) Andrew came to Woodville, Wilkerson County, Mississippi. He came to install machinery in the first cotton mill for weaving cloth.

After he had done this, he bought an 800 acre farm about six miles from Woodville at a community called Bethel. He owned one slave family.

In 1861, John went to fight in the Confederate Army, (note: He was in Co. D., 21st. Mississippi Volunteers) but was wounded in the leg and came back home. Prior to the Civil War, he and Sarah went back to Mentz to see her family. They left three daughters at home. In 1854, Mary Andrew married Benjamin Franklin McGraw at Woodville, Mississippi.

In June or July 1870, John Andrew sold his plantation. He and Sarah and single daughter, Martha, with Benjamin Franklin McGraw, wife Mary and six children; Thomas William Reed, Hannah Andrew Reed, his wife, and Martha Ann 6 months old, went on board a steamboat on the Mississippi River and came to Shreveport, Louisiana.

They left the boat and John Andrew bought two ox wagons and put his family therein and they traveled to Edgewood. He purchased several hundred acres of land six miles Southeast of the railroad station in Edgewood. They built a house for the McGraws on the land. Then he built a house for him and wife, and daughter Martha near this house. He built a house for Thomas and Hannah Reed and baby Mattie in the fall of 1870. After John Andrew built his house, he planted peach trees, cleared land and built rail fences.

In 1872, John and Sarah Andrew, daughter Mattie and Thomas William, Hannah Reed, with Martha Ann, age 3, and Thomas John, born 18 January 1872, moved to Terrell in Kaufman County and he built two plank houses on Virginia Avenue and College Street which was about 3 blocks north of Moore Avenue, the main street of Terrell. The house was two rooms facing East with a shed on the west side. Terrell was a small town of maybe 500 to 1000 people.

Benjamin Frnaklin McGraw and wife, Mary Andrew remained on their farm in Van Zandt County. In 1875, Mineola McGraw was born at Terrell in the home of John and Sarah Andrew. In November (six weeks later) Mary Andrew died at her home in Van Zandt County at age 35. She is buried in a country cemetery there. (Note: apparently this is was the Bundy-Cartwright Cemetery although no grave marker is there for Mary Andrew McGraw) This left Franklin, John Darling, Henry, Ancel, Leonard Franklin, Lola and Florence with baby Minnie to rear.

Thomas and Hannah Andrew Reed lived in a small house on north side of Andrews house like this. There was born on 8 September 1875, William Henry. Sarah b. ?, died?, Charles Edgar who died in infancy, then Arthur, born 28 Feb. 1880, Lillie May, born 24 March 1883, Earl, 21 June 1886 and Mary Penny, 14 October 1889, making 9 children.

About 1874, John Andrew bought a 200 acre farm 3 miles S.E. of Terrell and a mile East of King's Creek in a community known as Wilson Community. John and Henry McGraw stayed with them on the farm as he (John Andrew) was unable to do hard work.

John and Sarah Andrew and daughter Mattie, lived there. In 1882, John died of a tumor in his stomach and is buried in Terrell Cemetery. About 1880, Lola (Lillian) McGraw married James Thurston Buckaloo; they moved to Chico, Texas. Their children were, Bertie, born 1882, Mack 1884, Fred 1886, and May born 1898. (All these dates are my guesswork as I lived with them in Decatur 1904-6. ) Florence married Jim's brother, Bill Buckaloo in Edgewood. They went to Huntsville, Texas. There are their children, Maud, Pearl, Lola, Price. Bill and maybe some others. Maud married C.F. McFatridge, Whitesboro, Texas, died in about 1962 and he married Lola. They have both died. Pearl Rees lives in Houston, Texas and Bill in San Jose, California.

Bertie Buckaloo married Dr. C.R. Brown, Dallas, Texas. She died there about1964 and he later. One son, Rollins Brown lived in Jackson, Mississippi.

Mack Buckaloo married Christine Rogers in Decatur about 1915 and moved to Three Rivers, Texas. Their son, Mack, did live in Kennedy, Texas, and recently died. Their daughter is married and lives in Three Rivers.

Frederick D. Buckaloo married Thelma ?, in El Paso, Texas about 1920. Their son, James Thurston lives in El Paso. He and his wife, Lou, have Danny, now in Vietnam, Dwight David and Dorothy. Thelma is living, her two daughters are Lola Marie and Betty, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio. May Buckaloo married J.B. Luscombe about 1920 and they are retired and live in El Paso. One son, a lawyer, J.B., lives in El Paso."
