CONFLICT: John Smith who was the father of Francis, who was Susanna's father.
Francis Smith , of Hanover County , (probably son of William and
Elizabeth [Ballard] Smith ) was living there as early as 1745
(see ante page 2174, notes from Vestry Book of St. Paul's
Parish, Hanover County ) and as late as November, 1771 (when he
is referred to as Francis Smith ). He married _ Waddy , and had
issue:
This is admittedly very slight circumstantial evidence; but a
thorough search in the local records has failed to throw further
light on the matter.
That Francis Smith , of Hanover County , married a Miss Waddy is
the constant tradition in every branch of his family; a
tradition most probably correct though no record evidence has
been discovered to substantiate it. Tradition, however, varies
as to the baptismal name of this Miss Waddy . Among one branch
of her descendants her baptismal name is given as Susan ; in
several other branches of her family her name is given as
Elizabeth . In regard to the baptismal name of the wife of
Francis Smith we have record evidence and this evidence proves
the Elizabeth tradition to be correct.
In May, 1765 , Francis Smith and Elizabeth , his wife, of
Hanover County , conveyed to William French , land in Goochland
and Louisa County which had been conveyed to the said Francis
Smith , of Hanover , in January, 1754 , by one John Hill . (See
ante page 2170.) Then the will of Major Ballard Smith (dated
March 13, 1794 ; recorded in Louisa County May 10, 1803 (see
ante page 2178), names his mother Elizabeth [Smith] of Hanover
County .
In The Standard, Richmond, Va. , Sept. 18, 1880 , Mrs. Letitia
Lewis makes the statement that her grand mother, Susannah Smith
(wife of William Preston ), was daughter of Francis Smith and
Elizabeth , his wife, who was daughter of Anthony Waddy and his
wife Sarah Parke , of New Kent County .
For the few data discovered by research relative to the Waddy
family see Vol. III, page 1579.
There is still in existence (in the possession of Mrs. John B.
Young , Richmond, Virginia ), a portrait of Mrs. Elizabeth
(Waddy) Smith .
