Notes

Saint Leger also spelled SENTLEGER, English lord deputy of Ireland from 1540 to 1548, 1550 to 1551, and 1553 to 1556. Considered by many historians to be the most able 16th-century English viceroy of Ireland, he maintained peace in that country by upholding the feudal privileges of the powerful native chieftains.

Saint Leger was educated on the European continent and at the University of Cambridge. He was sent to Ireland in 1537 to intimidate the Irish Parliament into passing measures that were in accord with King Henry VIII's antipapal policies (e.g., the confiscation of monasteries). Returning to England in 1538, Saint Leger became a gentleman of the king's privy chamber and in 1539 was knighted. Appointed lord deputy of Ireland in July 1540, Saint Leger continued the conciliatory policy of his predecessor, Lord Leonard Grey. (Grey, who had been recalled and executed, had basically followed the policy that Henry VIII had advised 20 years earlier.)
Saint Leger secured peace in Ireland for eight years. The Geraldine League broke up after the young Gerald Fitzgerald, 11th earl of Kildare, was smuggled (1540) to safety on the continent. Thenceforth, public submissions to Henry VIII and renunciations of the pope were made by various prominent chiefs. On Saint Leger's advice they were given titles to lands that they had formerly held in defiance of English law. This has been called the policy of surrender and regrant.
Saint Leger was recalled early in King Edward VI's reign, but, after his successor's aggressive policies failed, he was briefly restored as lord deputy in 1550-51. The final period of his moderate rule in Ireland (1553-56) ended when Queen Mary I, a Roman Catholic, appointed a new viceroy to expedite her plans to reconcile the Irish church with the pope and to plant English colonies on Irish soil.

The Proprietors of the Northern Neck Chapter 5a - Leeds Castle http://gen.culpepper.com/historical/nneck/5a-leeds.htm

"In the time of Ethelbert II, King of Kent (say A. D. 857), a Saxon noble named Ledan built a fort on an island in the river Len overlooking the prehistoric trading road which was later known as 'the Pilgrims Way'. After the Conquest, Robert de Crevecoeur here built a Norman castle of Caen stone, and called it by the Saxon's name Ledes. Under Edward I, this castle became a possession of the Crown, and as such, appears from time to time in the English chronicles down to the time of Edward VI; when it was granted to Sir Anthony St. Leger (1494-1558) of nearby Ulcombe, in consideration of services in the government of Ireland. The third in descent from this grantee was the Sir Warham St. Leger, who was a son, by her first marriage, of the wife of Sir Alexander Culpeper12. In 1617 he sailed with Raleigh on the fatal expedition to Guiana in command of the ship Thunder, hoping, like his admiral, to retrieve a broken fortune in that adventure. On his return to England in 1618, after the failure of the voyage, he was still further weighed down by his losses; and he then found it expedient to exchange Leeds Castle for a less honourable but income producing manor.

At the time of this transfer of title the castle was little more than a medieval ruin, in which the St. Legers had never resided: but the new owner, Sir Richard Smith, son of a late 'customer' of London, having command of ready money, began to build within the bailey a Jacobean manor house. Before this work was completed Smith died and, in 1632, his heirs offered the property for sale.

Appropriately enough, considering the early association of the Culpepers with Leeds Castle, the next purchaser was Sir Thomas Culpeper, the elder, of Hollingbourne. Although intending the castle to be the residence of his family, he did not occupy it himself, but settled it, in tail male, upon his three sons, Cheney, Francis and Thomas the younger. The cost of completing the fine new house and of subsequent maintenance of such an establishment seems to have deterred Sir Cheney, always hard up, from moving into residence, and the next we hear of the castle is that a fine was levied, the settlement was docked and Sir John Culpeper, the future peer, was recognised as the owner by purchase.

The consequence was that the Commonwealth escheated [claimed rights to] the castle with the first Lord Culpeper's other manors, and for some years used it as a public magazine. In 1651, however, Sir Cheney came forward with a claim that the castle was still his property, doubtless meaning that the agreed purchase money had not been paid by Lord Culpeper; and as Sir Cheney, alone of his family, was 'well affected' to Cromwell's government, the castle was duly surrendered to him (Cal. State Papers, Dom. 1651, pp. 197, 302) . Thereafter, until his death in 1663, Sir Cheney was styled 'of Leeds' (Cf. the entry of his name on the pedigree of his wife's family 'Cage of Bersted' at the Visitation of Kent, 1663-68; Harl. Pub., liv, p. 32)."

1. John Trammell, Sr., Gentleman, owned large tracts of land in Falls Church and vicinity, as did his brothers Sampson, Garrard and William. In 1733 Alexander Scott conveyed to John Trammell, Sr. and wife Susanna, His wife, of Truro Parish, 200 acres near Pimmitt Run. Trammell had patented land in the vicinity (then Stafford County) in 1728, as witnessed by a statement in a deed dated September 1, 1766, from his son, John Jr., to another son, William of Loudoun County. This deed was for 464 acres of land " originally takenup by John Harle of Stafford." Patented in 1728 by John Sr., "who devised it to John Jr., to have and to hold unto the said William Trammell"

On July 11, 1735, Trammell leased a tract of land from Alexander Scott of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County. he continued to add to his land and his home was probably the "Cherry Hill" residence of the later day Riley family (now next to the city Hall). The Trammell tract included the Reagan Paten and since Micheal Reagan failed to file a deed to the Vestry, Trammell owned the Falls Church which he deeded to the Vestry. John Trammell, Sr. Gentleman died in 1753 and his will was made by Thomas Wren on April 9, 1753, probated May 20, 1755. His estate was appraised by Captain Charles Broadwater on December 19, 1758. He had a number of slaves on his Loundoun "Quarterly Tract" References to his children can be found in Loudoun County. Order Bk U, page 31 and in a note address to the Court, July 14,1794 (Jewell, Vol. IV, Pg 160) Caron Trammell, widow of Sampson Trammell, Jr., refused to administer the estate and asked that William Gunnell, Jr., of Loudoun Co. be asked to qualify.
