Middle Name in honor of Colonel Melancthon Smith, War of 1812.
He migrated to Macon, GA where he soon rose into prominence as a
business man and amassed considerable. he entered the
Confederate army and became a colonel ere the close of the War.
The War Between The States was disastrous to him as to others,
and he was nearly ruined; he had to start life afresh, but
fdeclining years and ill-health were against him,.and he never
recovered his losses. In 1889 he resided in Birmingham,
Alabama.
In early manhood he was fine specimen of youth, good looks and
stately bearing.
