Notes

""A Brief History of the Hanmer/Hamner Family in Wales & Colonial Virginia" by James Edward Hamner, III and Catherine Anne Clark Hamner.p. 51

"Our original emigrant ancestor, Humphrey Hanmer, settled in Yourk County, Virginia, approximately in 1638, since 8 April 1638 is the first date that his name is mentioned in the York County Records [VA Mag. of History and Biog., vol 5,l p.362]. Most likely, he arrived in Virginia earlier than 1638, but this one is the initial reference that names him in a legal action. He was a communicant of the New Poquoson Parish Church, since legal notes dated 2 February 1646, referring to his last willl, mention a bequest of a Holy Communion silver service to this parish church."

  • DEATH: 1886, Copiah Co. Mississippi

  2.  William T. HEAD Sr.

Notes

The Head family resided mainly in Mississippi in Winston County, Hinds County and Copiah County. They were involved as ordained preachers and laymen in the Baptist Church and in the drugstore business.

William Hughes Head (1821-1886) was the son of Burr H. and Martha Head, and was a Baptist minister and educator. In Mississippi, he served as pastor to Concord Baptist Church, Louisville (near Winston County), and to other Baptist churches in Terry, Hinds County and Crystal Springs, Copiah County. In Texas, he was pastor for Tryon Church, Brazos County and North Grove and Hallettsville churches in Lavaca County. He also held preaching engagements in Louisville, Hinds County and Copiah County in Mississippi and in Texas. He taught in Louisville and Hinds County, Mississippi, and Union Parish, Louisiana. From 1882 he made his home in Mississippi in the areas of Copiah County, Hinds County and Winston County, where he died. He was married to H.R. Potts, a daughter of Samuel L. Potts, in 1848.

The Head family papers document the professional and lay careers of the family in the Baptist church and the drugstore business. Papers relating to William Hughes Head document his preaching and teaching life. Other papers reflect his time as a student in Indiana. Correspondence reflects William H. Head's concerns with theology (in particular Baptist doctrine), the courtship of Will T. Sr. and Rena Bonney and the time spent by Will T. Head, Jr. at college in Mississippi both before and after World War I. Letters written during the period of World War I document the service of Will Jr. at Camp Beauregard, La. and later on the front in France, and activities on the home front in Terry. Writings reflect William H. Head's service as a preacher, including sermons and addresses given, as well as his own continuing education in theology and Scriptural and Classical languages. Financial, legal and business records include receipts, accounts, insurance papers, promissory notes, mortgages, deeds of sale and trust, reports and certificates. Some financial and legal papers belong to Dr. C.L. Catching, Will T. Head, Sr.'s partner in the drugstore business. Manuscript volumes consist of sermons and essays written by William H. Head, diaries and journals, financial records primarily related to Will T. Head, Sr.'s business and registers, roll books and notebooks. Printed items mainly consist of ephemera, invitations, programmes and religious items such as Sunday School materials and addresses. Serials include issues of local commercial and college newspapers and Baptist imprints. Photographs depict members of the Head family and postcards include many from France during World War I that depict Will Jr.'s camps and areas visited while on leave.

Notes

Knighted in 1426, his first service was in 1439 as Warden of the East March. About this time, he married Eleanor, heiress to Lord Poynings. In 1448, he invaded Scotland and burnt Dunbar. The Scots retaliated and burnt Alnwick and Warkworth. The King ordered him to invade Scotland where he was defeated by the Earl of Ormond and captured. Henry VI recompensed him for his ransom upon his release. In 1451, he was joint ambassador to Scotland to sue for peace. He succeeded to the Earldom upon his father's death at St. Albans in 1455. Later that year he fought James II in alliance with the Earl of Douglas. 1456/7 saw the continuance of the Percy/Neville feud. In 1458, Northumberland received compensation for his father's death from the Yorkists and took part in "Loveday". At the Parliament of Devils, in 1459, he was appointed Keeper of the Forests North of the Trent and Constable of Scarborough. After Northampton, he plundered the Yorkists estates in Yorkshire and Durham. When York came North to retaliate, Northumberland helped defeat him at Wakefield. In 1461, he helped raise troops for the Queen and beat Warwick at the second battle of St. Albans. He was killed at Towton commanding the van of the Lancastrian army.

I'm descended from Rev. Stephen Shell (b. 1754) and Jane Ellis who came from the area of Pigeonroost Creek on the Roanoke River between Virginia and North Carolina to the Newberry District of South Carolina in the late 18th century. He is the son of William Shell who came to the area of Pigeonroost Creek from the tidewater area of Virginia, Surry and
Sussex Counties and was probably born around 1728. William eventually came to live near his son Stephen in Newberry District.

Stephen and Jane died in 1822 and are buried in Tranquil Cemetery in Newberry County. Their descendants eventually moved on to Fayette and Coweta Counties, Georgia, Butler County, Alabama, and parts of Mississippi and Louisiana.

We have a substantial amount of information on the family, our American ancestors, cousins, and descendants, all of which is posted for public perusal at http://Web.InfoAve.Net/~danshell/surnames.htm.

We are very interested in any information which would even suggest clues for research of European origins. We have reason to believe the family is English, perhaps from Worcestershire. A dictionary of surnames refers to a "Shell Bank" there from which the family took its name.

If you have a minute, please check out our web site at the link above. If you find a connection or can offer a clue, let me know. Thanks, Dan Shell

"The Tax List for Bute County, North Carolina in 1771 shows him, then about 17 years old, as head of a household with 2 taxables, himself and a slave. He was likely entrusted with responsibility for management and cultivation of his father William Shell's land there. On January 25, 1785 William deeded him 225 acres in Warren County, North Carolina (Warren County, North Carolina Deed Book 8, p. 197).

According to Bishop Francis Asbury's Journal, recording his movements in January of 1790, he was at "Ellis's church" in Sussex County, Virginia on the 7th. By the 14th they had crossed the Roanoke River into Warren County, North Carolina where they "slept at Stephen Shell's."

In 1799 he was one of the founders of Tranquil Methodist Church in Newberry District, South Carolina and served it for many years as pastor. On Sunday, December 12, 1802, it is recorded in Asbury's journal that "I was called upon by recommendation to ordain Stephen Shell... to the office of deacon."

In 1808 Rev. Stephen Shell was among the trustees of Mt. Bethel Academy, a Methodist school planned by Bishop Asbury (Thomas H. Pope. History of Newberry County, South Carolina, Vol 1, p. 215)."

(*Transcription note: Errors and omissions in the DAR transcription have been preserved. Notable among these are the statement that Stephen Shell moved to Chickasaw County, MS about 1840 (Stephen Shell died in Newberry District, SC in 1822), different spellings for Francis A. Shell: "Frances A. Shell and Elizabeth A. Harrell...", "Elizabeth Shell Infant Daughter of F.H. and Elizabeth A. Shell...", birthdate for Morgan C. Shell should read "November 9th 1832", and the recording of Daniel Shell's marriage should read "Daniel Shell married to Lucinda Griffin".--Dan Shell, Dunlap, TN, danshell@bledsoe.net, 1999)
