This line of Hodges has been proven by other researchers with the exception of the more than one John in Marlboro Co. SC. See his record for details.

The Hodges who left wills in Norfolk County, VA were: presumably descended from Edward Hodges whose will was proven in VA in June 1649, and of which a mere mention has been made, (and of the author has no other record): or from one of the early emigrants to Maryland, viz: Thomas Hodges who came in 1636 or Benjamin Hodges who came in 1633. Richard of will (1750-51), q.v., had a son Thomas. Kent County Maryland, and also about a dozen other Maryland counties, lie on Chesepeake Bay or short distance up large rivers which flow into Chesepeake, and are so within easy access of Norfolk county, VA. In early days it was easier to travel by water than any other way, and so the early settlers located near navigable streams.

NC Drake & connection between the Council (Councill) and Drakes of I of W or of Somerset in England? connection with the Hodges and Council with the Drake family, and that was with John Drake, son of Richard and Thomazine Drake in that John's headright was counted by both Hodges Council and Colonel Arthur Smith. Not all of John Drake and his wife, Jemima Parnell have been accounted for, but various researchers have assigned some children to them based upon the "best case scenario" of certain ones being in the right place at the right time, and based upon them and the interactions of their progeny over succeeding generations. Men such as Hodges Council could have used members of their own family, as importees to help them to acquire acreage. John Fox Winston Salem, NC.

Nansemond Chronicles 1606-1800 Virginia Colony by Mrs. Evelyn Hurff Cross, privately pub. 1973 (Nansemond county history) p. 38 In 1639 Tristram Norsworthy arrived to marry the daughter of Col. Joseph Bridgers. He brought a servant and received 120 acres of land. He became a Burgess. When Warrasquake was named a Shire he became the Sheriff.

p. 31 The Archbishop of London, father of Col. Joseph Bridger I and the Rev. Robert Bridger, sent them to Warrasquoake with a shipment of brick, window sash, timbers and plaster to build a buttressed Brick church in 1632. The architectural plan was copied from the parent church in London. Over the lecturn a window 25 feet high was adorned with painted glass representing scriptural subjects. A loft tower held a bell and was capped with a weathervane. The carved pulpit with its circular stairs rose above the closed pews of carved wood. The Rev. Robert Bridger was its first minister. The Rev. Samuel Bridger, Joseph Bridger's son, followed him in the pulpit. The entier colonisst roster was tythed to support this church. When the wardens failed, the sheriff was called to take from the colonists the amount assessed. The Royal Militia was present to keep the peace.

p. 198 Land Patent Tristan Norsworthy 200 acreas assigned Thomas Stephens and Epaphroditus Lawson 7-18-1639 behind Ragged Island of a bay, wife Ann Norsworthy, adjacent to Mr. Daniel Gookin servant Jane Bembrick.

Triston Norsworthy 100 acreas upon a place called the name of "Long Pond" westerly upon William Ayres land easterly upon John Seaward 5-101638 page 530 transported 3 Thomas Hodges and John Hodges same 50 acres Upper New Norfolk same date and page-known by the name "Kennedy's Island" butting east upon the maine river soutward towards Ritch Island north towards maine river south towards Chuckatuck River transported a servant.

The ink was hardly dry on establishing and naming the original "shires" before changes began to occur. In 1636, the name WARROSQUOAKE was changed (thankfully!) to NEW NORFOLK; the following year (1637), it too ceased to exist and its territory was divided into:
LOWER NORFOLK -- nearest the mouth of James River
UPPER NORFOLK -- farther inland and southward
ISLE OF WIGHT -- a little farther westward on the south bank of the James. About this same time, an enclave had been established on the end of the Northern Neck. That became the shire of CHICKACOAN.
In 1642 came another series of wholesale name changes, beginning with dropping "shires" in favor of counties; also:
UPPER NORFOLK was renamed NANSEMOND
ACCOMACK was renamed NORTHAMPTON
WARWICK RIVER was renamed simply WARWICK
CHARLES RIVER was renamed YORK
The same year brought the first of several truly influential Royal Governors: Sir William Berkeley.
1690-1705
Sparked in part by the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in England -- the coming of King William and Queen Mary -- the colony began to rebound in the late 1680s; the price of tobacco began to rise and immigration again picked up. In this period, six new counties were formed:
LOWER NORFOLK ceased to exist in 1691, with a portion cut off to form PRINCESS ANNE and the remainder becoming simply NORFOLK.
