"Mathews Flournoy settled in Scott Co. KY ca 1750, establishing Fort Flournoy. He carried the glass windowpanes for his house over the Appalachian Mountain range in saddle bags for the house which still stands and is on the Historical Register of Scott Co.. He conducted 13 parties of settlers from Virginia into Kentucky and in the spring of 1785, on his 13th trip, was killed by Indians in the Cumberland Gap.
This death is documented by a detailed eyewitness account in the
Virginia Magazine of History and Biography but was recalled from
family story by my great-grandmother who was Mathews'
ggg-granddaughter. This list of Mathews' children is taken from
notes left by my mother. Children: Robert; Samuel b December 9,
1758 m Nancy Ann Martin August 19, Mercer Co. KY; David John;
John James; Francis; Mathews Jr., Patsy Caroline m. Wells,
Thomas, Lucy, and Elizabeth b 1768 m Henry."
"Matthew's house is now used for a farm office, and been
beautifully restored. Restoration had been started on a
remaining outbuilding. It is located on a country road off Hwy
460 east of Georgetown KY (Scott County) .
