Anne GERARD

ABT 1640 - by 1675

ID Number: I22349

  • RESIDENCE: Westmoreland Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1640
  • DEATH: by 1675
  • RESOURCES: See: [S601] [S2329]
Father: THOMAS GERARD Gent. "the Immigrant"
Mother: Susannah SNOWE

Family 1 : Walter BROADHURST
Family 2 : John WASHINGTON "the Immigrant"

Notes

Anne GERARD + Walter BROADHURST; widow of Walter Broadhurst, who died between Jan. 26 and Feb. 12, 1659.

Virginia, Prominent Families, Vol. 1-4, Volume IV, Chapter III Washington.
Col. John Washington.
"September 28, 1670, is the date of a statement of account of Lieutenant Colonel John Washington, who married Ann, widow of Henry Brett: "And we do find that Mrs. Ann Brett Washington has paid," etc., etc., "witness our hand this 3rd October, 1670. Recorded 9th October, 1670."

May 31, 1671, Mr. Samuel Brett of Plymouth executed a discharge to "Lieutenant Colonel John Washington who intermarried with Mrs. Ann Brett, widow and administratrix of Henry Brett, of Plymouth, merchant, deceased."

The Anne Washington of Col. John Washington's will was not the Anne Washington, mother of his three children, Laurence, John and Anne, but was the dead Anne therein referred to. The live Anne Washington of the will was the Anne (widow of Walter Broadhurst, that in the interval since his death had married Mr. Henry Brett who also had died; whereupon she married Colonel John Washington).

An old document in the diocesan registry of Litchfield, dated April 12, 1678, stated that Walter Broadhurst, her son, "was granted administration of the goods of Anne Washington, alias Broadhurst, late of Washington Parish in the County of Westmoreland, Va."

In Westmoreland County is recorded a marriage contract between Col. John Washington and Frances Appleton, widow of Col. John Appleton and born Frances Gerrard. This contract is dated May 10, 1676, so, of course, Mrs. Anne Washington, the second, must have died before that date.

Frances Gerrard, daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerrard and his first wife, Susanna, daughter of Justinian Snow, one of the founders of Maryland and Lord Baltimore's factor in the Indian traders, married, first, Col. Thomas Speke; he died in 1659. She married, second, Colonel Valentine Peyton and had Gerrard Peyton, who died s. p. She married, third, Captain John Appleton, who died between February 25 and April 12, 1676. On May 10, 1676, she entered into a fourth matrimonial engagement, this time with Col. John Washington.

Dr. Thomas Gerrard was for a long time Councillor in Maryland, but was finally banished for taking part in the insurrection of Isaias Fendall in 1659. Before this he had provided a refuge in Virginia having obtained, October 18, 1650, a patent for land and naming among the head rights his wife, Susanna Gerrard, and his children, Susanna, Temperance, Frances, Justinian, and John Gerrard. The same day, October 18, 1650, Walter Broadhurst patented land next to William Hardwick on the west side of "Poor Jack Creek." As Walter Broadhurst had a son "Gerrard," it might be that Anne, his wife, who afterwards married Col. John Washington, was a daughter of Col. Thomas Gerrard, as well as Washington's third wife, Frances."

  10. +Susannah "Sukey" HENRY

Notes

"The following is copied from the Richmond Standard, published Saturday, May 29, 1880; contributed by R. A. Brock: "In vigour of intellect in its various exemplifications, in true manhood, and in illustrious and material service in the one sex, and in the typical exhibition of womanly grace and virtues characteristic of Virginia and the South in the other, no citizen of the Old Dominion within its annals or traditions has been more honored in his descendants, to the present generation, than John Henry, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, and son of John Henry and Jane, the sister of Dr. William Robertson, the historian, and thus the cousin of the distinguished Lord Brougham. John Henry emigrated to Virginia sometime before 1730. He enjoyed the friendship and patronage of Robert Dinwiddie, who introduced him to the acquaintance of Colonel John Syme, whose widow he married. He was Colonel of militia, surveyor, and for many years presiding magistrate of Hanover Co., Va. He had been liberally educated, was well grounded in the classics, possessed an excellent judgment and strong natural ability. He executed a map of Virginia, which was published in London in 1770, a copy of which was in the possession of Joseph Horner, Esq., of Warrenton, Va., a few years ago."

Charles Campbell (History of Va., p. 521) says: "Appended to it is an epitome of the state and condition of Virginia. The marginal illustration is profuse and, like the map, well executed.""

Edward MOSS

ABT 1660 - ____

ID Number: I94874

  • RESIDENCE: York Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1660, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Father: Edward MOSS

Notes

Edward Moss b. About. 1660 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England

From "Genealogies of Virginia Families" , Vol. II, pgs. 716-717; Vol III, Pg 135:
Edward was born about 1650 and was a justice of York County, Virginia from 1677 until 1691, and made his will in 1716. The following letter is on record in York County:

"To the Rt honble Sir William Berkeley, Knt., governr &c., John Baskervyle, in behalf of York County most humbly presenteth:
That the said County being of large extent, but few magistrates to officiate, some being lately dead, humbly prays that Mr. William Booth, Mr. Edward Mosse & Mr. Robert Cobb may be admitted by yer Honr into the commission being reported Loyall & honeste Subjects. And he shall ever pray &c.

John Baskervyle, the writer of this letter was the clerk of York County. The following answer was returned:

"the 23 March 1676-7 this petition is granted and these are ordered to be sworne at the next County Court. Teste, Henry Hartwell, Cl. Con."

Apparently Berkeley laid the letter before the Council of State, who directed their clerk , Henry Hartwell, to return a complying answer. The letter seems to show that Edward Moss did not side with Nathaniel Bacon in his disturbances which occurred at this time, being reported "a loyal and honest subject." Edward served as justice until 1691, when he declined to take the oath of a justice of the peace, required by Parliament with the accession of the new King William to the throne, reportedly alleging that he would take no oath other than what he had already taken. Evidently he did not care for the new king.

Edwards children are named in a deed and his will.
