  2.  Benjamin BRASHEAR

Notes

VOL. 5 of A BRASHEAR(S) FAMILY HISTORY, "Two Brashear(s) Families of the
Lower Mississippi Valley, Their Choctaw, & Other Descendants,"
"By the late 1770s, American and European immigrants were already moving into the lower Mississippi Valley in search of new land, even though much of that territory was under Spanish control. Some of them came by ship to Pensacola, Mobile, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Natchez, all of which were developed ports under French and Spanish administrations. Others came by flatboat down the Cherokee (Tennessee) River, then proceeded down an ancient, Indian trading path, soon to be known as The Natchez Trace. Still
others began floating down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to find new land.

Two branches of the Brashear(s) family were among these early immigrants:
1. Benjamin Brashear and all his children except Marsham (who stayed in Louisville, KY) and 2. Jesse Brashears and all of his children. In both cases, one or more members of the family married into the Choctaw tribe and founded large families that are still traceable today. Other of their brothers and cousins founded large, non-Indian families."

  2. +William BURDEN

Notes

"Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Soldier in the American Revolution.

According to "The Family of Abner Ponder," p vii, Archibald Burden lived in the Abbeyville District of SC and then in Elbert Co, GA. There were close ties between the Ponder, Burden, Penn, and Weems families in SC and GA. Abner Ponder and Benjamin Penn both married daughterrs of Archibald Burden. One of Abner Ponder's older daughters married James Burden who may have been a son of Archibald Burden and another married James William Penn Weems.

Archibald E. Burden: One of the first known settlers of Elbert County was Archibald E. Burden. He was born about 1745 in Amherst County, Virginia. He and Hannah Goad were married about 1770. Archibald E. Burden was a revolutionary war soldier. He is listed in the journal of the house of delegates, dated 1778. He is also listed in the Historical Registrar of Virginians in the Revolution. In 1783, he is listed as the head of the family with nine white souls in his household in Amherst, VA.

The Burdens are believed to have come to Elbert County between 1785-1790. They settled in that part of Wilkes County, which later became Elbert County, and more specifically near Bowman, GA.

Archibald and three of his sons took part in the 1805 land lottery. Except for "Cuffy" who was apparently unmarried at the time, each had two draws.

SOURCE: Much of this information was provided by Sheila Kay Mason Casper of Fairbanks, AK. Other sources include William B. Burden's Bible; Pioneers of Hart County, Georgia; Family Records of Charlotte Johnson Brown and Judy Winn; and a booklet entitled, "The William Burden Family"."

Jordan GIBSON

ABT 1730 - 1787

ID Number: I69587

  • RESIDENCE: PeeDee River Area, SC and NC and 1785 Sumner Co. TN
  • BIRTH: ABT 1730
  • DEATH: 1787, Scapled by Indians near Sumner Co. TN
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2654]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) GIBSON

Family 1 :
  1. +Mariah or Moriah GIBSON
  2.  Roger GIBSON
  3.  Rhoda GIBSON
  4.  Cynthia GIBSON

Notes

"Jordan Gibson had come to Sumner Co in 1783 or 85. He was granted 640 acres by the state of NC on 17 Apr 1786, on the north side of Bledsoes Lick Creek. He was scalped by Indians and consequently died in 1787.

Jordan left no will, but Roger Gibson, James Odom, and James Harrison requested the court divide Jordan's estate four ways. George Winchester was appointed one of the commissioners to divide the estate. Three of those four parts went to Roger Gibson, James Odom who had married Rhoda Gibson, and James Harrison who had married Cynthia Gibson.

It is unknown who the fourth part was intended for, but it is now believed that part probably was for Susan Black's mother. This means the Gibsons were not half-sisters and brother to Susan Black. I had thought that perhaps Susan's mother was a sister to Jordan Gibson, which would explain the close association of the two families. However, a Black family researcher and I analyzed the families and have come to the conclusion that Susan's mother was a daughter of Jordan Gibson, probably by an earlier marriage. This means that Susan's mother, rather than Susan, was the half-sister of the three Gibsons - Roger, Rhoda, and Cynthia."
