Notes

Aka: Johannis Vander Horst. "First Families of America" (Virkus), Vol I, page 867: John Vander Horst, a soldier in the army of the Prince of Orange, came from Holland to New York about 1690 and moved to Charleston, SC about 1695. (Note: these dates are too late. other records indicate he came some years earlier).

Warrants for land in SC - Vol. 3 - p. 80; 2 Dec 1694. to Thomas Smith, Gentleman, 650 acres "on acct. of arrival Rights for the arrival of fourteen persons named: Sabina de Vignon, John Vander Hoas, Arnoldus Vos" (and eleven others).

As the name indicates this line came from the Netherlands. Founder of the line in America was John Vanderhorst. He is said to have gone first to New York, which was settled by colonists from Holland and called New Amsterdam. But the British had taken it and renamed it New York. John soon went to SC. A group of people from Holland came to SC under leadership of John D'Arsens, Sieur van Vernhaut. John Vanderhorst was without much doubt one of these. Possibly they all went first to New York. Some, perhaps most, of them were Huguenots, whose ancestors had fled from France.

Thomas Smith was one of the Landgraves or Counts during the time the Lords Proprietors were trying a sort of modified feudal system in the Carolinas. the system was not suitable and was discarded. Thomas Smith was Governer 1693-4. In 1687 he married as his second wife Savina deVignen, widow d"Arsens. An historic old house "Medway" is said to have been the home of the van Arsens and later of Thomas Smith.

John Vanderhorst seems to have been in SC some years before 1694. He founded a line which gave the state several public men, senators, representatives, Revolutionary officers and a governor.

It is not always clear which records concerning John Vanderhorst refer to the father and which to the son, several records mention Captain John Vanderhorst, who apparently was the son.

Warrants for land in SC, Vol. 3, page 176: 20 Jan 1702, Robert Gibbs is granted a warrant for land "joyning to ye west on ye bridge that leads to mr. Vanderhorst's.

From SC Hist. Gen Mag, Vol 58, p. 39-40: In 1715 it is recorded that John Vanderhorst bought from the heirs of George White 580 acres on the sought side of the Wando river, granted to White in 1704 by sir Nathaniel Johnson, governer.

At first the Indian names Sewee and Wappetaw were associated with this area; later it was Christ Church Parish. Early generations of the Vanderhorsts lived here. They were dissenters.
