From VA Prom. Fam "in 1751 her son, Samuel Battaley, of Spottsylvania, was heir-at-law to his mother, "the only surviving heir-at-law of her father, Samuel Mathews." Deed recorded in King George, conveying 2,000 acres in Richmond County patented in 1654 by Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Mathews, which descended to his grandson Samuel, who made his will November 16, 1718. John Bolling, of "Cobbs" (q. v.), lived first in Gloucester county from which he was a delegate in the house of burgesses in 1766-1769. Afterwards, in 1778, he was a member of the house of delegates from Chesterfield county. He married Mary, sister of Thomas Jefferson. He was born June 24, 1737, and died in 179--."
