Notes

"They derived their fortune from the marriage of their ancestor Walter Beauchamp to the daughter of Urse D'Abitot, the ‘Conqueror's notorious sheriff of Worcester’, around the year 1110.

D'Abitot, along with his brother Robert, had seized a great part of his land from the church in Worcester during the years of the conquest, and Walter Beauchamp inherited half of D'Abitot's estates, including the castle of Elmley which was their principal centre of power in the period from 1110 to 1268.

From the twelfth to the fifteenth century, the Beauchamps owed much of their pre-eminence to a number of fortunate marriages, and the marriage to D'Abitot's heiress was the first of these. They were of that class of men whose ability and influence made them essential cogs in the administrative machinery of the localities; part of D'Abitot's inheritance was the hereditary shrievalty of Worcestershire and, although free to nominate a deputy to perform the job in his place, only Walter Beauchamp (II), Earl William's grandfather, did not serve as sheriff of Worcestershire, in person, for at least part of his adult life. The shrievalty certainly helped to secure the Beauchamps' status as the most prominent lay landholders in Worcestershire, a county unusually dominated by ecclesiastical landlords."

Notes

John BOYD of Berkley Co VA, by Gordon W PAUL; SLC; chapter 1, page 1:
"A Robert BOYD, a native of the Province of Ulster, Ireland, and of Scotch parentage, settled in the Cumberland Valley in the vicinity of what is now Chambersburg, Franklin Co PA, in about the year 1737, on land purchased from the Indians in 1736. Although at this time we are unable to make a connection, thirty-five miles south- southwest on Opequon Creek, across the Potomac River, is the town of Martinsburg, near where our ancestor John BOYD settled. About 1754 John purchased 101 acres of land surveyed to a Robert JACKSON, who at that time was living on the property. As John BOYD's eldest son was born in 13 Apr 1756, it is possible this land purchase marked his arrival in what was then Frederick Co VA. (page 2)..born in England... one o f the earliest settlers to the county...was an indian fighter as all early settlers were required to be on account of the frequent incursions of the savages, and always came off victorious in his many encounters with them...He acquired his land in this county by the original gra t from Lord Fairfax , the patents which are still preserved by descendants....he resided near the North Mountain, about five miles west of Martinsburg... a man of Herculean frame of body, and some anecdotes are related of his hand to hand conflicts with the indians, which demanded all his activity and strength, but in which he was generally victor...he married abt 1754 to Sarah GRYFYTH, a native of WALES, and died in the year 1800, leaving eight children. (page 3) ..BOYD's Gap on the crest of North Mountain is a pass over that mountain that was named after John..three tracts of land totaling 291 acres were taxed to him and were in his poses sion upon his death in 1800.

Will proved 23 Jun 1800, Berkeley Co.Virginia; Estates of John Boyd Sr. and Sarah Boyd in court 15 Jan 1810, Berkeley Co., Virginia."

5 Robert Pembroke MCCANTS 1830 - 1890 b: 1830 +Cecilia REILLY m: 1858.

NOT SURE THIS IS SAME ROBERT son of Nathaniel.

Research: Capt. Robert P. McCants enl at Amelia Island, FL, served CSA for Florida 19th Battry under Major Williams - the P. may be Pembroke - he may belong to this line of McCants.
From: ChuckMoseley@webtv.net (Chuck Moseley) Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 To: jbass@digital.net; Subject: Capt.Robert McCants; I have an old document of R.P. McCants around 1850 in Marion Co Fla. He owned a general store.

From "Units of the Confederate States Army:": "Marion Light Artillery [of Florida] was organized on Amelia Island, Florida, in June 1861. Later moved to Kentucky and took part in the fight at Perryville. The company [battery] served in S. C. Williams', M. Smith's and L. Hoxton's Battalion of Artillery, and participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. It then was involved in the defense of Mobile and was included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The unit was commanded by Captains John M. Martin and Robert P. McCants."

Report from Official Records, VOL XXX, PT II p.450, concerning McCants' Battery at Chickamauga: HEADQUARTERS WILLIAMS' BATTALION, October 7, 1863.
SIR: In compliance with instructions, I have the honor to submit the following report of the part taken by my command in the late battle of Chickamauga:
I crossed the Chickamauga at Alexander's Bridge early on the morning of September 19 with my battalion, composed of Kolb's, Darden's, Baxter's, and McCants' batteries, and arrived on the field just before the infantry became engaged. I was held as the reserve artillery of Buckner's corps, and was posted accordingly in rear of his line, where I remained for several hours.
While at that place Baxter's battery was detached and ordered to report to Brigadier-General Gracie, and remained under his orders until the close of the battle. McCants' battery was detached and ordered to report to Colonel Trigg.
About 2 p.m. I was ordered to take a position with my two remaining batteries to check the enemy in case our infantry, which was then hotly engaging him in my front, should be driven in. I remained in this position about two hours, subjected to a very heavy fire of artillery from the enemy, without returning it, losing several men and horses killed and wounded, I was then removed to a position near the one I occupied in the morning. McCants' battery returned to me.
I remained here until 11 or 12 o'clock on the morning of the 20th, when I was moved forward and placed in several positions without engaging the enemy until about 4 or 5 p.m., when I was ordered to move up and open fire upon the enemy, who was crossing from his right to his left. I opened fire first with eight and then with eleven pieces, one piece having been disabled. The fire was kept up at intervals from half to three-quarters of an hour, with considerable effect on the enemy, his line being broken, and Major-General Stewart having closed in across my front, I ceased firing. While in this position I was subjected to a fire from the enemy's artillery at about 900 yards until he was driven away by our fire.
The officers and men of my command behaved with great coolness, notwithstanding most of them had never been in an engagement before.
Accompanying this please find reports(*) of the several captains of my command, also a report of the casualties and losses sustained.
Respectfully submitted.
S.C. WILLIAMS,
Major, Commanding Battalion Artillery.

Extracts from Major Williams' report show that McCants Battery had 1 @ 10-pounder Parrott and 3 @ 6-pounder Bronze, expended 85 rounds and had one man wounded.

McCants was promoted 1st Lt in January, 1862 and Captain April 2, 1863.
Monument at Chicamunga Battle Park. I have not found him or his regiment on the web.
