King ATHELRED I of Northumbria

0774 - 0796

ID Number: I97723

  • TITLE: King
  • RESIDENCE: Northumbria
  • BIRTH: 0774
  • DEATH: 0796
  • RESOURCES: See: notes

Family 1 : ALFFLAD

Notes

NORTHUMBRIA. The sequence of events must be reconstructed from the 'First Set of Northern Annals' (B33). For an interpretation, see Wormald (E27), pp. 114-15; the sequence of rulers is set out in M1, pp. 18-20. Numismatic evidence is summarised by Blackburn (M122), pp. 295-8. One important figure was King Athelred I (774-780 and 790-6), who married Alfflad, daughter of King Offa, in 792. Another was King Eardwulf, who was consecrated king on 26 May 796, expelled in 806, and restored (briefly), with Frankish and Papal support, in 808. [E132] E.J.E. Pirie, AEarduulf: a Significant Addition to the Coinage of Northumbria', British Numismatic Journal 65 (1995), pp. 20-31.

MAUD de BEAUCHAMP

1311 - 1369

ID Number: I88440

  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: 1311, Of Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, England
  • DEATH: 1369, England
  • RESOURCES: See: LDS 1592-6SK [S1123]
Father: GUY de BEAUCHAMP 2nd Earl of Warwick, Knt.
Mother: ALICE (Adeliza) de TOENI

Family 1 : GEOFFREY IV de SAYE 2nd Baron de Say
  1. +IDONEA de SAYE

Notes

"Maud, another of Guy's daughters, led a more colourful life. She firstly married Geoffrey de Say, whose property included manors in Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Kent. Together, they produced at least four children. William was the only boy, and his father's heir. Of the three daughters, Idonea went on to marry John Clinton of Maxstoke. Maud was also very close to Edward III, Queen Philippa, and their daughter Isabel; she was so valued by the royal family that, in 1368, she was awarded an annuity of 100 marks per annum for her long service in the royal household. After Geoffrey's death in 1359, it appears that she married again, for in her will she requests that she be buried in Black Friars, London ‘near Edmund, my beloved husband’, but Edmund's identity remains a mystery."

Notes

Dr. A. Y. S. Garnett, another connection, was one of the chief surgeons of the Confederate army.
"From "The Garnetts of Essex County and Their Homes" by William Garnett Chisolm; Genealogies of Virginia Families III:

Alexander was a physician of some renown, and was the personal physician to Confederacy President Jefferson Davis. He was born at "Prospect Hill", the home of his parents, on the Rappahannock River, Essex Co., VA. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an M.D. Degree in 1841. He applied for a commission in the medical corps of the navy, and was commissioned an assistant surgeon. In 1848, his vessel was visiting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and he met his future wife, Mary E. Wise, daughter of the Minister of Brazil, Henry A. Wise. Henry later became the Governor of Virginia. Alexander and Mary married later that year in Washington D.C.

In 1851, Dr. Garnett resigned from the navy to engage in private practice in Washington D. C. He became one of the outstanding general practitioners in the city. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he offered his services to the Confederacy and became one of the prominent medical officers in the Confederate Army. He was in charge of two military hospitals and was personal physician to the Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

In 1865, broken in health and with a shattered fortune, he returned to Washington. He was able to establish himself again, as one one of the prominent general practitioners in the city, despite the hostile and bitter post-war feelings. His later years were spent in family practice, teaching younger physicians, and in ardent support of the movement to improve the professional ethical standards of physicians. He died of a heart attack in 1888."

Notes

"Emigration: Bet 1750 and 1754 County Ulster, Ireland to area of Lexington, Virginia. John McNutt b. N. Ireland. Left behind when parents came to America. Married Katherine Anderson after she had stowed away aboard ship bringing him to America. Settled east of Lexington VA. Known as Scotch Johnny.

THE McNUTT FAMILY OF ROCKBRIDGE-Jno. McNutt, one of the first settlers of the county, married Catharine Anderson, in England, )a relative of Judge F. T. Anderson) came to America and settled on the farm now owned by Joseph Falls, on North river. They raised seven sons: Alex, Robert, John, Isaac, Benjamin, William and Joseph; and two daughters, Margaret and Rebecca.

Robert died of wounds at the battle of Cowpens; John married Mary Lard; Isaac went to Red River, Louisiana; Benjamin moved to Tennessee, married and left a family; William married Betty Grigsby and lived in the county; Rebecca married twice, first John McCorkle, who died
of wound at Cowpens, and afterwards Arthur Glasgow;

Alexander McMutt married Rachel Grigsby, a daughter of John Grigsby; whose grave is the oldest in Falling Spring graveyard. By this marriage there were thirteen children, one of whom, Gallatin McNutt, was governor of Mississippi. One of the daughters, Elizabeth, married John Hamilton of Rockbridge. They raised two sons and five daughter, one of whom married Rev. Mr. Osborne, and was Mrs. Cress' mother.

The descendants of Jno. McNutt are settled in the Southern and Western States, and many of them have occupied positions of usefulness and honor in the civil and military history of the south.

From the McCormick Genealogies, Leyburn Library, Washington & Lee University: John reported as an early settler with Alexander McNutt in Augusta Co, VA (NGS Quarterly, Vol. 25, p. 51). "John McNutt ("Johnny, the Scotchman) [another record calls him "Scotch Johnny"] and his wife, Katherine Anderson, about 1750, arrived in the upper valley of the James from County Ulster, Ireland. He settled on North River about 6 miles east of Lexington, where he had grants of land from the government." He was one of 122 signers of a petition against religious assessments for support of ministers, presented to the General Assembly in the House of Delegates, 1784.

Another McNutt file said: "John McNutt migrated to America from Donegal County, Ireland about 1745 and settled in Orange Co. (now Rockbridge) Va. on the North River about 6 miles east of Lexington where he had grants of land from the government. His wife was Katherine, daughter of Robert Anderson of Killagorwen. His [John McNutt's] father [Alexander?] had
already established himself close-by." It is said the original name was McKnight and that on their emigration from Scotland to Ireland they changed it to McNutt. This statement is quite confirmed by the fact that on examination of a full and complete directory of Scotland in 1889, the name McNutt was not found. Katherine Anderson had a brother, ancestor of the Anderson Family of Boutetourt County, Virginia."
