Notes

Aka: Turnpike George. He accumulated extensive holdings in the area that became Moscow. He became known as Turnpike George Swartz to distinguish him from Bear Brook Geroge Swartz who lived along the Bear Brook east of Moscow. He made the first permanent settlement along the Drinker Turnpike at what is now Moscow. He moved his family into a log cabin near the intersection of Main and Academy Streets on 16 May 1830. The cabin was complete with an earthen floor and a stone fireplace at one end of the single room over which their gruel was cooked in an iron kettle. A hole in the roof let the smoke out, and sometimes the fire was extinguished when it rained or snowed. The windows were of greased paper, and the tables and benches were made of split logs into which pegs were inserted for legs.

George Swartz, a shoemaker, was the storekeeper of Dunmore Corners for Henry W. Drinker when he was building his turnpike. Swartz was partly paid in cash and partly in land. He was a farmer, cobbler, and mail carrier between Moscow and spring Brook from about 1865 to the time of his death. He was a church leader, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Moscow Methodist Church, and rendered invaluable service in raising money to build their first building.

DRINKER'S BEECH includes the area contained in the townships of Covington, Madison, Roaring Brook, Elmhurst, Spring Brook and Clifton, and the Borough of Moscow. It was the first name given to this combined area.
