Notes

ANOTHER CS HERO BURIED IN BRITAIN
Colonel RICHARD MILTON CARY CSA

Richard Milton CARY was born in Richmond, Va. in 1835. His father was Miles Cary, his mother, Harriet, was formerly Miss Staples. He always had a love of England and spent much of his life in Cornwall, England.

About 1860 he married, in Britain, Lucy Wilson. By 1862, he was a Captain in the 12th Virginia Infantry. It is here that he distinguished himself as part of Gen. Jackson's 'foot cavalry' and was promoted to the rank of Colonel with the 30th Virginia Inf.

For many years he was believed buried here, research revealed that he died of Albuminuria and Morbus Cordis, both of which had troubled him for many years. He died on 15th March 1885, age 52, in Woodfield, Budock, Falmouth and is buried in Falmouth Cemetery, Cornwall.

The photo shown was supplied by Jackie Pettit, who aquired the picture from a 90 year old decendent of the gallant Colonel. I believe that this photo says a great deal about Col. Cary, the man.

married Anne Dunbar.

On the right of the plot is Davis Street, running north and south, north to the reformatory, the southern course running nearly into the heart of the city.

"A large majority of the graves of the dead Confedeates are now level, and the wooden headboards originally placed have long ago disappeared. Nothing marks the graves save as herein after described---excepting the case of four at irregular places, on each of which latter loving hands of relatives ot friends have erected marble mementos.
