Civil War soldier's family learns tale of his service

By MICHELLE MILLHOLLON Advocate staff writer

PINE GROVE Abel Warren Hodges came home from the Civil War a sickly, old man. It's the only image his children ever had of him and it's the one they passed down to their own children.

It was left to his descendants to flesh out the rest of the story.

In dusty war records, they found the tale of a young soldier who marched off to battle, fought bravely, was wounded and captured twice before returning to his St. Helena Parish home.

On Sunday, a host of his descendants gathered in a country cemetery to dedicate a marker that notes Hodges' service and capture.

"We're simply trying to hold onto a period in our history where honorable men fought for what they thought was honorable," said Lonnie Melvin Sibley, Hodges' great-grandson.

More than 50 people turned out for the ceremony, which was held in the warmth of the afternoon. Sibley stood before a crowd of family and friends and told his ancestor's story.

Sibley's grandmother was Hodges' daughter, and she talked often about the hard times that followed the war. Hodges returned home to his wife and children, but his vigor was gone. He had been shot during battle and never fully recovered from the wound, Sibley said.

On hot days, he would sit in the coolest part of the front porch because the heat aggravated his wound and caused him to bleed internally.

His daughter, Sibley's grandmother, took over the plowing from her ailing father, who lingered 21 years before dying.

Hodges apparently never talked to his children about his war experiences and his headstone at Pine Grove Cemetery merely notes his vital statistics.

His descendants, who grew up hearing the family stories, yearned to learn more. Working together, they've painted a vivid picture of a man who had died long before any of them were born.

Great-great granddaughter Sandra LeBlanc Gilbreath sketched out a family tree. Her brother, Brian LeBlanc, worked with Sibley to find war records detailing Hodges' service. What they discovered made them proud, Sibley said.

Hodges joined the Confederate army in 1862 and fought at Vicksburg, where he was captured. He signed a document promising not to take up arms against the United States again and later was released.

Contrary to his word, he returned to the battlefield as a mounted infantryman and was wounded and then captured again. He was released in May of 1865 and headed home, sick and weary.

Regardless of the cause he fought for, Hodges' story is one of heritage and honor, his family said.

"I'm grateful for him and who he was and what he did," Sibley said. "I have to live in the light of him."

Mar 22, 1998 there was a dedication of a footstone for Abel W. Hodges' grave at Pine Grove Methodist Church cemetery in Pine Grove, St. Helena Parish, LA where Abel is buried. It is a confederate soldier footstone. Re-enactment group performed the musket salute, a 21 gun salute. Over 50 relatives attended and Lonnie Melvin Sibley, Hodges' gread=grandson told his ancestors story.. Write up and picture was in Baton Rouge Advocate 23 Mar 1998.

The Dedication Memorial described Abel's war service.
He entered the CSA at Greensburg, LA Mar 1962, Co. H, 27th Reg. LA INF. He fought during the seige at Vicksburg and was captured when the city fell July 4, 1863. He was paroled July 7, 1863 and in the Fall of 1863 Corporal Hodges was exchanged after which he joined his old Company H of the 27th Reg, LA. INF which had reformed in Clinton, LA as Mounted Infantry attached to Col Gobet's Command. He was wounded during a skirmish that occurred between Woodville and Liberty, MS, was captured again and held till he was released May 29, 1865.

Hodges returned home to his wife and children, but his vigor was gone. He had been shot during battle and never fully recovered from the wound, on hot days, he would sit in the coolest part of the front porch because the head aggravated his wound and caused him to bleed internally. His daughter, Sibley's grandmother took over the plowing from her ailing father.

Josephine,
Wanted to let you know that the dedication of the Confederate Services footstone that was held for my gg grandfather, Abel W. Hodges , was absolutely beautiful. A very moving tribute.

I am sending you a copy of the newspaper article that appeared in the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate the next day. Another wondeful bonus that came our way -a grandson of Silas Jefferson Hodges saw the write up and contacted my uncle. This man has a picture of Abel as a young man , and also one of Abel's father John as an older man , along with a picture of Abel's son Silas with his wife and a child or two !!! We are so excited . Hope you enjoy the article.

Subject: Sledd / Tinsley families

I noticed on your Lowary genealogy page that you list Thomas Sledd /Sally Tinsley as ancestors. They are my ancestors as well - my line comes down from their oldest son William T. Sledd. For some unknown reason, William and some of his siblings changed their name from Sledd to Slane during the 1830's - even Sally Tinsley Sledd, the mother, was listed in tax records as Slane in the late 1830's. Do you have any information on this family and their ancestors other than what you list on your web page? I would love to send you what I have if you are interested. Ed Slane
