Notes

About 1820 Nelson moved with his younger brother Samuel to Pike Co. MS, and joind his older brother Robert and sister Nelly Smith. Samuel returned to Madison Co. GA; Robert moved to Yazoo Co. MS and Nelson moved to St. Landry Parish, LA. (Now Acadia Parish, LA)

In the 1850 St. Landry Parish, LA census, Nelson was listed as 67 years old, living next to his son Giles, his property was valued at $200 and he was from VA, non occupation, his son Giles was a Planter, Giles' property was valued at $800 and he was 41 years old.

There is still (1996) a community in St. Landry Parish, (now Acadia Parish) LA known as Higginbotham named for members of this family.

On his daughter, Mary Ann Higginbotham, Baptismal Certificate,
Church of St. Charles, Grand Coteau V 1 p 116, her parents names are shown as Nelson Eckerborn Higginbotham and Judith Ware.

Nelson & Judith moved to southern Louisiana from GA and settled in the area now represented by the parishes of Acadia, Lafayette, and St. Landry. The majority of the "clan" settled in an area five miles south of Church Point and 20 Miles north of Lafayette which is known today as "Higginbotham" as indicated by recently erected highway signs. Many of the descendants still live in this area, and many of the old Higginbotham homes still stand as a tribute to the pioneer spirit of their builders.

Samuel of "Beggar's Bush" JORDON "the Immigrant"

ABT 1580 - 1622

ID Number: I61924

  • OCCUPATION: member of the initial House of Burgesses
  • RESIDENCE: ENG & 1610 Jamestown, VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1580
  • DEATH: 1622, Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S1707]

Family 1 : Cicely REYNOLDS

Notes

"He had been previously married in England, but after his first wife died, migrated to America in 1610 aboard the Sea Venture. He first settled at "Jordans Journey" near the confluence of the Appomattox and James Rivers. He later added large holdings on the south bank of the James at Jordan's Point, where he built a house called "Beggars Bush." "Cecily's second husband was a member of the initial House of Burgesses of the Colony where the first specific instance of genuine self-government emerged in the British Colonial Empire." ("Great Issues in American History--1584-1776" verSteeg & Hoffstadler.) As the Mayflower was unloading in New England back in 1620, another exciting development ocurred in the lives of Samuel and Cecily Jordan. They, along with all the surviving stockholders of the first Virginia Company, were honored with the label of "Ancient Planters". They were also given legal title to their lands and various immunities and privileges in connection with their use. These were the rewards they had earned by their perseverance in establishing the first permanent beachhead of English colonization on American soil. (This document still survives.) The next-door neighbors of the Jordans were as steeped in distinction as they now were. Captain John Woodlief to the north had already held the first American Thanksgiving Day in 1619 at Berkeley Plantation (Officially conceded in proclamations by U.S. Presidents--John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.) John Rolfe (II) to the south had won and lost Pocahontas and was about to reap the treachery of his in-laws for his trouble. The Powhattan's tried to wipe out the entire English Colony in a concerted uprising on Good Friday, 1622. Fortunately for the Jordans, they received a forewarning of the plot in sufficient time to fortify "Beggar's Bush" against attack and save their buildings and most of the livestock. Not many months after this, Samuel Jordan passed away."

A marker at Jamestown, Virginia, lists the names of the Burgesses who represented the different areas of the Jamestown Colony at the first General Assembly of Virginia. Among them was Samuel Jordan who was one of two representatives from Charles City, an area that included Samuel's plantation, Jordan's Journey. This was the beginning of representative government in the English Colonies of North America.
