A Joshua Carney was in Stafford Co. in 1760, and continued to appear there on tax lists until at least 1789. The 1773 list shows him with 40 acres. Apparently living with him was a Benjamin Carney whose taxes were charged to Joshua, so perhaps Benjamin was his son. We do not know whether or how Joshua and Benjamin were related to the John Carney who md Mary, though that appears quite likely. Joshua filed a claim for having performed public service during the Rev. War.

A Joshua Carney received a land grant Dec. 26, 1803, in Stafford Co.: Description: 11 1/2 acres on both sides of the north run of Chappawamsick adjoining land of Sudden, and Green. Benjamin received land grants about the same time, including two grants in 1805 in nearby Prince William Co. (Also, Carney, Joshua Public Service Claim, Rev. War)

There are no Carney's in the Stafford County, Virginia will indexes for 1729-1767.

Apparently the John and Mary Carney family united with the Chopawamsic Baptist Church: The following declaration, copied from the records at the Virginia State Library, was the genesis for the Chopawamsic Baptist Church:

"Here, in the Colony of Virginia firmly desiring to be constituted and established into a distinct church of the same denomination, faith and order and being at our request freely dismissed for that purpose from the church in Fauquier aforesaid. And appears by a letter signed by several members of that congregation ---- date August
9th, 1766. Hoping it may be to the glory of God and our edification, these subscribers in the presence of God solemnly unite as a religious body to worship him, to celebrate his ordinances, to manifest his truth and to promote his honor in the world....."
The declaration concluded:
"That all disputes may as far as possible be avoided and peace, concord and unity maintained by the blessing of God for which we pray and in testimony of our union herein we have all set our hand this day of our constitution being the 22nd day of November 1766." Among the many registrants were:
Mary Anderson, John Carney, Mary Carney, Absalam Carney, Sary Carney, and Joshisa (sic) Carney.
(Fauquier County,Virginia was formed 1 May 1759 from Prince William County, Virginia.)

Apparently the general area where the Carneys were - John, Thomas, Joshua, Benjamin, Absalom, Sarah, ... was in what is now the Quantico Marine Base reservation. I think it likely that the Absalom and Joshua on the above petition were NOT children of John and Mary, because of their ages, and the lack of other children's names on the list."
