Aka: Rebecca /Taylor/ d/o John Tayloe of Mount Airy VA. "In 1769, Frank, then in his thirties, married a girl of 16, Rebecca Tayloe, one of the eight daughters of John Tayloe of Mount Airy. It was a marriage of love, and the letters they exchanged while Frank served in the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg reveal how much the separation cost them."

"Menokin was the plantation and home of patriot Francis Lightfoot Lee and his wife, Rebecca Tayloe. Rebecca's father, John Tayloe II of nearby Mt. Airy, made a wedding gift of the Georgian mansion and 1,000 acres to the couple in 1769. The estate now consists of 500 acres situated on Cat Point Creek in Richmond County in Virginia's Northern Neck. Many of Virginia's most famous plantations are nearby. The property is home to many species of wildlife including beaver, otter, pileated woodpecker, osprey, and bald eagle. The Lees died without children in 1797, and the property was left to the heirs of Francis Lee. In 1800 it reverted to the Tayloes. In the early nineteenth century, it was the home of John Tayloe Lomax, first professor of law at the University of Virginia. The property was sold in 1823 and, eventually, it was passed down to Thomas Edgar Omohundro and his sister, Dora Omohundro Ricciardi. Upon Dora's death, she willed her share to Thomas and, on July 4, 1995, he gave the entire property to the Menokin Foundation." Francis Lightfoot Lee's MENOKIN c. 1769
A National Historic Landmark. Menokin is located four miles northwest of Warsaw, Virginia off Route 3 on Route 690 (Menokin Road). Nearby is Stratford Hall Plantation, the ancestral home of the Lee family and the childhood home of Francis Lightfoot Lee. Also nearby is Mt. Airy, the architectural prototype for Menokin and childhood home of Rebecca Tayloe, wife of Frank Lee. The Menokin Foundation, a tax-exempt private organization, was established to preserve this National Historic Landmark and eventually restore it to its eighteenth-century splendor. An equally important mission is to use the opportunity to train students. (Contributions appreciated. http://www.stratfordhall.org/menokinmember.htm)

Arthur I WHITEHEAD "the Immigrant"

ABT 1620 - ABT 1655

ID Number: I99237

  • OCCUPATION: miller
  • RESIDENCE: England and Isle of Wight Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1620, Lancaster, Lancashire co, England
  • DEATH: ABT 1655, Isle of Wight Co. Virginia [491919]
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S359] [S2283]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) WHITEHEAD

Family 1 : Katherine RUFFIN
  1. +Arthur II WHITEHEAD
  2.  Lazarus WHITEHEAD

Notes

"Probably born in England. Immigrant, he was brought into Northampton County, VA by Obedience Robins as recorded on 22 March 1643, when he was listed as one of the Head Rights of Obedience Robins, who on that day received a patent for 450 acres in Northampton County, Virginia..
Northampton County Records, Vol. 3, p. 229, Vol. 4, p. 175 show him there by 1650. He migrated to Isle of Wight County, Virginia Va as recorded in land transfer records, 1673-1706, between him and his son, Arthur (hereafter referred to as Arthur, II, though in some records he is listed as Arthur Whitehead, Jr.) The name of his first wife is not known, but they were not married long and only one child, a son Arthur is known.

Arthur Whitehead 1st. was a cooper, a barrel-maker. His mother, ... Stephen Horsefield, and Arthur Whitehead were early land owners by virtue of William Ruffin's gift to Katherine of 200 acres (1670) which was to be divided equally between Arthur and Rebecca after her death. This land was on Cypress Swamp of the Blackwater River in the Isle of Wight, perhaps slightly southeast of present-day Isle of Wight Courthouse. Rebecca sold her 100 acres from William Ruffin in 1703 - Arthur's 100? The landholding progress of the early WHITEHEADs shows Arthur Whitehead 1st. settling in the area bounded on the north by the James River and on the east by the Nansemond River. His first land was titled in 1670, acquired more from the Stricklands in 1697-99, slightly southwest of his original holdings.

In 1725 son Arthur Whitehead, Jr. patented land in the area where Nansemond County and Southhampton County touch North Carolina, and son Lazarus patented land in the same area in 1727.

Arthur I was illiterate, using "X" on legal records. John Scott Davenport summarizes it: "Arthur's sons were literate, he was illiterate. How did this happen? He "married upwards." There were two millers in his neighborhood, Purcell and Godwin. Arthur himself married a daughter of Arthur Purcell, miller. His eldest son William was a miller in North Carolina and was married to Rachel McKinney whose brother Barnaby had mills in both Virginia and North Carolina. Millers abounded in the family thereafter. Arthur I's land was inherited by his eldest son William who sold the land in 1719 and moved south into North Carolina. William was a major land speculator, merchant miller, Colonel of Edgecombe County, North Carolina Militia and his plantation was on the south bank of the Roanoke above Scotland Neck. The Colonel's third son was Lazarus; he lived in Nash County , North Carolina. He accumulated large acreage, more than 3400 acres on the north side of Swift Creek, south of the Halifax line, adjacent to Edgecome County. . .

Col. William WHITEHEAD settled in 1725 on a plantation called "Spring Meadows" which lay on the south bank of the Roanoke River. . . three to four miles east of Tillery, North Carolina . . . The plantation was deeded to Tobias WHITEHEAD in 1750 and went out of the WHITEHEAD name in 1798 when it was divided between Tobias' heirs: Shields, Pitman, and Forte."
