Man finds gravesite of ancestors By:DWAIN LAIR 04/30/2004

NEWTON CEMETERY - For most of his life, Richard Garrett McFerrin listened to family members talk about the tragic deaths of two of his great-great-grandfathers.

Family members said the men had been killed at the same time during the Civil War and were buried in the same grave, along with three other soldiers.

McFerrin, who was born in Harrison but moved to Oklahoma at an early age, said stories told by family members led him to believe the gravesite was in Marion County. But as a cool breeze blew across Rolling Prairie on Wednesday evening, McFerrin and his wife, Marilyn, stood in front of his ancestors' grave in Newton Cemetery in southeast Boone County, carefully reading the narrative on the newest headstone in Newton Cemetery.

The headstone erected a few years ago by the Sons of Confederate Veterans lists the five soldiers buried in the one grave: James Angel, Temple Garrett, John W. Garrett, John Riggins and Lafe Rice.

McFerrin said his great-great-grandfathers were James Angel and Temple Garrett. He said his great-grandfather married Clementine Garrett, who had been engaged to marry Lafe Rice, who had been killed in the attack.

According to the narrative on the monument:
"The five men listed and a Mr. Price, age 65 or 70, all Confederate soldiers, while returning to their company, stopped to rest and water their horses at the mouth of Richland Creek in Searcy County. Jayhawking Union soldiers ambushed them from the bluff, shooting in the back six of the group of eight. Two sons of James Angel escaped and brought word to the families.

Clementine, 19, fiancee of Lafe Rice, and Elizabeth, 20, daughters of Temple Garrett, drove an ox team and wagon from Rolling Prairie in Marion County to the Cash place in Richland where Mrs. Cash and others had buried them with her help. The five bodies were disinterred and the journey begun to take them to Marion County. The stench of death prevented them going further than this site, where the two girls dug a grave and buried the five men."

After a moment of silence, the McFerrins picked their way through the briars and brush to walk back to their car and leave. The story was finished.
