GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES II, Cl-Fi, Richard Cocke of Bremo and His Children, pg 249:
Notes:"..It seems that Arthur Bayly, merchant in Jamestown in 1638 (Id., I 97; see I, 131), who was perhaps a son of William Bayley, ancient planter (Id., I, p. xxix), had sold prior to year mentioned a tract of 1,000 acres of land in Henrico County to Robert Hallom's heirs, on of whom was his widow, Ann Hallom formerly the wife of John Price, labourer (Id., I, 86).

John Price and his son, Matthew Price, after him owned land on Turkey Island Creek (Id., I, 88).
The above facts help us to understand the references to some of these names in Richard Cocke's several patents...

Cl-Fi, Cicely Jordan Farrar and Temperance Baley, pg 788:...
Arthur Bayly (Bayle), merchant in James City Island in 1638, described also as "of Curles, Merchant in Henrico Co., " is named in a deed of sale witnessed by Richard Cocke and Christopher Branch.. Some time prior to 1638 Arthur Bayly had sold to Ann Hallom, widow of Robert Hallom, and to Robert Hallom's other heirs a tract of one thousand acres of land in Henrico county which was apparently part of the land patented by Richard Cocke of Henrico county in 1636...

Cl-Fi, Links in a Chain, pg 799, Notes: "Richard Cocke's first patent, dated 6 March 1636-7, was for 3,000 of land in Henrico Co. (Nugent, p. 54) Already before Richard Cocke went ther to live, some portion of this large tract had been know perhaps a number of years previously as "Bremoes devident," for so it was called in Captain Thomas Harris's patent dated 2 May 1636 about a year earlier that the date of Richard Cocke's patent. "Longfeild" was a plantation of 700 acres close by Bremo (Id., pp 37, 60)

The land which Richard Cocke olaid claim to in his patent seems to have overlapped and embraced a tract of 1,000 acres which had been patented by Robert Hallom )or Hooom) in 1636 (Id., pg 41) or which had been purchased by him from a merchant, named Arthur Bayly (Id, p. 86) The consequence was that after Hallom's death, Richard Cocke found it necessay to obtain a second patent, 10 March 1639-40, this time for 2,000 acres only inasmuch as he had had to relinquish or surrender 1,000 acres "unto Ann Hallom, widow of Robert Hallom", (Id, p. 120, 13 W2 308 et seq.)...It may be supposed that Captain John Browne and Richard Cocke, or Coxe, had been comrades together in the new world far from their old home in England, and that uner the circumstances it was quite natural for Richard Cocke to marry the widow of his deceased friend."

Notes

The main article identifying Lawrence Smith's ancestry is "The Townleys and Warners of Virginia and Their English Connections" by Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.

As for his wife, Rudolf Loeser identifies her as almost certainly Mary Debnam. See his two articles in The Virginia Genealogist: "Katherine (---) (Debnam) Grymes and Some Relatives" Vol. 41, No. 3 (July-Sept. 1997) pp. 163-171, and "Margaret (Debnam) Perrott and Some Relatives" vol. 42, No. 1, pp. 3-17.

was a resident of Gloucester county, Virginia, and in March, 1675-1676, he commanded a fort at the head of Rappahannock river. In Bacon's rebellion he sided with Governor Berkeley, and after Bacon's death led the Gloucester "trained hands" against Ingram, but they deserted him. He was surveyor for the counties of Gloucester and York in 1686, and in 1691 laid out Yorktown. In 1699 the governor recommended him as suitable for appointment to the council. He died in 1700. From his coat-of-arms Major Smith appears to have belonged to the Smiths of Totne, county Devon, England. He was father of Colonel John Smith, of the Virginia council.

The Colonial Gen. Vol. VIII, #3
LDS AF, March, 1994, AFN: 9JZM-GF - gives a dau only first name of Mary. Maj. Lawrence Smith probably did marry Mary Hitchen in England. She apparently died in England before he immigrated into Virginia. They had a duughter Mary born 24 Oct 1652 who apparently died also in England.

"Major Lawrence Smith, of York, was an engineer and surveyor, and became quite prominent and influential in the period immediately previous to Bacon's rebellion. In 1674, the name of Major Lawrence Smith first appears in the historical records of the time as follows:

At a grand assembly, held at James City between the 30th of September, 1674, and the 17th of March, 1675, in which war was declared against the Indians, among other provisions for carrying it on it was ordered that one hundred and eleven men out of Gloucester County be garrisoned at one fort, or place of defense, at or near the falls of the Rappahannock River, of which fort Major Lawrence Smith to be Captain or Chief Commandant, and that the fort be supplied with four hundred and eighty pounds of powder and fourteen hundred and forty-three pounds of shot.

This fort was established by Major Lawrence Smith, in 1676, and later in that year he led the trained bands of Gloucester Co. against the forces of the rebel, Bacon.

In 1679, Major Lawrence Smith was empowered, provided he would "seate" down at, or near, said fort by the last day of March, 1681, and have in readiness, upon all occasions, at beat of drum, fifty able-bodied men, well armed with sufficient ammunition, etc., and two hundred men more, within the space of a mile along the river, and a quarter of a mile back from the river; prepared always to march twenty miles in every direction from the fort; to execute martial discipline among the said fifty soldiers, and others, both in times of war and peace; and said Major Lawrence Smith, with two others, to hear and determine all causes, civil and criminal, that may arise within said limits, as a county court might do, and make by-laws for the same.

In 1722, the county seat of Spottsylvania, which included this establishment, was located at "Germana," where the first court sat, Aug. 1, 1722, and the following justices or magistrates were sworn in: Augustine Smith, John Taliaferro, Richard Booker, Richard Johnson, William Hansford, and William Bledsoe.

Major Lawrence Smith was surveyor of the counties of York and Gloucester in 1686. He laid out the site of Yorktown in 1691. He was recommended, in 1699, as among "gentlemen of estate and standing," and eligible for appointment to the King's Council, but his death in 1700 prevented the bestowal of this honour upon him. Major Lawrence((1)) and Mary Smith had issue:
