Letters of administration were filed for John P. Jan 1838. p. 368 Nov term 1838 Inventory of his estate including 4 slaves: Hannah, Warick, Mat, Tell, James McKnight administrator. Most of his records are in Book 3, pp18, 70, 31, 182, 287, 574, 576, 597, 686. The minor children were John L., Jane D. and Judith, now Carrington. Gale H. Kyle was John L's guardian (July 1843)
p. 18, additional inventory of personal property of John P. Harton. James McKnight paid $11.25 for silver watch for B.T. Harton. Total personal property from sale $497.55. Will Book 3, p274 lists heirs pp575-577 show that Benj. received in cash $182.14 3/4, Sarah $222.1/4; Jane D. 87.14 3/5 and John L. 232.14

"The era of education in this county begins with its organization. The records of its earliest schools are meager. In fact, I might say, that of them there is no record at all, except the recollection of its old citizens, and the traditions which they received from their ancestors. I can find no record, nor even a tradition, of any school in Alexandria, hence I conclude that the time in which that settlement existed, was too short for the organization of a school. The first schoolhouse in Jackson was erected in 1824 by John Harton, who taught a school in that house for, perhaps, two or three years, but about it no facts can be gathered further than that it existed. However my inference is, that Mr. Harton only taught the primary branches, and that the attendance in that school was small."

1902 History of Madison Co. by J. G. Cisco published in American Historical Magazine, Vol 7, #4. School will commence on the 31st inst by John P Harton. March 22, 1828.

Vol 3, #34 has notice that the Rev. John P Horton will preach at the courthouse Jan 20, 1827. In Tennessee Tidbits mention is made that John P. Harton and William Adams made a report of the inventory of the estate of Elizabeth Johnson who died before 13 Feb 1815 when the two proved her will in Robertson Co., TN. Court Minutes 3/532 and 3/564.

In 1847 Benjamin T. Harton and Gale H. Kyle petition for division of the property of John P. Harton consisting of tracts of 70 acres, 80 acres, 85 acres. Other heirs were Sarah Ann, Judah P. , Jane D. and John L.

There is also a deed dated 29 Dec 1828 from John P Harton and Thomas Harton of Madison County and State of TN to John W. Trousdale also of Madison Co for a parcel of land in 10th surveyors district . This was land sold to John P by Wm B. Butler and on which Thomas Harton now lives. (DB2:355-356. Madison Co., TN. ) Aug 1804 John Harton, orphan of John Harton aged about 13 to be apprenticed to Gideon Pegram till age 21.(p 243, Will Book 12) On p. 244 Thomas was also apprenticed to Gideon to "learn the art of being a planter" He was 11.
p 327 of Book 13 Gideon aged 18 the 21 of April next apprenticed to John Sims of Warren Co to stay until age 21 "art of using tools and also to teach him to read and write."

Oct 1813 - GIDEON PEGRAM, attorney for JOHN P. HARTON/HORTON of Tennessee and DANIEL HARTON/HORTON of Tennessee, to BENJAMIN NICHOLSON for $500 - right and title to undivided tract of land that is the right of JOHN P. HARTON for whom the said GIDEON is attorney, and the right of DANIEL for himself - land that was left to them with other legatees by their father, JOHN HARTON/HORTON on the waters of Hubquarter Creek... begin at a red oak PEGRAMís NW corner.... S to WILLIAM PEGRAMís NW corner... N along JONESís line to a maple RIGGANís corner... to Hubquarter Creek... to MILLERís corner... Wit: W HAVEL O? WILLIE BALTHROP. Proved Feb Ct 1817. (DB20:138)

This may have been the John Harton who served as a Private in Capt John Moore's Company 1 Reg't Tennessee Vol. Inf, Regiment commanded by Col Edward Bradley from 26 Sept 1813 to Dec 10 1813 for $28.06. A note (from National Archives) says: Non-commissioned officers and privates marched to rendezvous at Fayetteville, 105 miles and from Fort Strother to Gallatin, 219 miles. Roll was dated Nashville 8 June 1814.

The Census of 1830 for Madison Co., TN, shows John P with two males between 5 and 10, one male 20--30, 2 males 30--40. Females were 2 under 5, one 5--10, one 10--24 and one 24--36. It sounds like this is a blended household. Perhaps his brother Thomas is the other male 30--40?
John P. and his brother Thomas sold to John N. Trousdale a lot in the city of Jackson on 29 Dec 1828. The deed was not recorded until May 1830. Part of the lot was the land Thomas "now lives on." (Madison Co., TN, DB 2,p 355) DB$ p 361, John P sold to John Garrison a tract of land in Madison County for $800, bordering on the north line of Shannon, 14 Feb 1829.
One of the problems in dealing with this John P. Harton is that his uncle Burwell also had a son named John P. Harton. Researchers in Madison Co., TN, have attributed the Mary Harris Powell, who married John P. Harton in Madison Co., AL, to this one who was plainly in Tennessee for most of his adult life. It is true that Burwell Harton was his guardian in 1804 and he could well have visited him in Alabama, but the John P. Harton in Alabama was active there at the same time that John P. Harton was written up in Robertson and Madison Counties in Tennessee.

Jackson Gazette, No. 11, Vol. 7, Sept. 4, 1830
Died in this town on Monday morning, Miss MARGARET M'CLANAHAN, in the 22d year of her age. Departed this life on the 31st Aug. 1830, Mrs. MARY HARRIS HARTON, wife of the Rev. JOHN P. HARTON, and dau. of Capt. PEYTON POWELL of Alabama.

Warren Co., NC Minutes to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1801-1805
Media: Book Page: 297
Text: 28 August 1804 John Harthorn and Thomas Harthorn, orphans of John Harthorn be bound to Gideon Pegram, John age 13 and Thomas about 11 years.
