Notes

William Leftwich Whitely was probably named for an uncle, William Leftwich, (a Lt. Col. In the Revolution) who married Henry Haynes' sister. Lived at Dover in Russell Co. Alabama.

Posted by: Shirley Owens Date: February 16, 2001; In Reply to: Francis L. "Frank" Whitely by josie bass: Josie, I think your Francis L. Whitely was a brother of my great-grandfather, William Leftwich Whitely. William was born in Liberty (Bedford) County, Virginia in 1819, son of William and Mildred Haynes Whitely. He and two brothers (I think Frank and Albert) migrated to Alabama about 1836. The Frank Whitely who married Elizabeth Hand was their uncle. We have more on the Whitely family if you are interested.

William Leftwich Whitely was born in March, 1819, in Liberty (Bedford) County, Virginia. Some sources give his day of birth as March 12, but I recall that my mother said he did not know the exact day-did not "even" know, she said, in a tone of sympathy and added that he was an orphan. His father died when William was two; his mother died when he was twelve. William's daughter Susie wrote to her nephew, Seals Whitely, "My own father and two of his brothers came south. My father came at the age of seventeen years and lost trace of all his family except the two brothers, his sisters died before he came south. They were a family of twelve. I never knew anything much about them. Father's father died when he was an infant and he was left an orphan at twelve and had to support himself after that. The children were defrauded out of their property and their mother had a hard struggle but the battle with poverty made a noble man of your Grandfather."

William left Virginia in 1836, at age 17. He settled in Russell County, Alabama, and lived in Alabama until 1869 when the family moved to Rome, Georgia. The 1850 Census shows them living in the Phenix City district of Russell County. [Russell County and Lee County are adjacent counties in Alabama that join Georgia at Columbus.]

William owned land in Alabama and according to his son Ike, was a hard worker and a good horse trader. Ike said that his parents were "regular old-fashioned chicken pie Christians, strict members of the Methodist church." Family tradition says that William decided to move to Rome so that his girls could have a college education.
Perhaps there were good land deals at the time which might have had something to do with his move. (We have copies of several deeds in Alabama and in Georgia.) Perhaps he already had relatives in Rome since Ike mentions cousins who were in Rome when he arrived.

Perhaps, considering the Civil War and Reconstruction, the family was simply ready for a change. I am sure that they were greatly affected by the deaths of the two oldest sons in the 1860's, one at age 18 in battle, the other at age 16 by drowning in the Chattahoochee River. In Rome, the family lived on what is now Third Avenue near the old Shorter building but later lived on Avenue A. In 1870, William is listed on the Census for Floyd County as a miller; on the 1880 census, he was owner of a livery stable, the latter occupation being the one I had always heard about. The Livery Stable was at 86 Broad Street. The Rome Courier of August 1, 1877, shows this advertisement (small with dark print and a graphic of a carriage) on the front page: W. L. Whitely, Proprietor/Keeps constantly on hand to hire, Good Horses and Excellent Vehicles, Splendid accommodations for Drovers and others. Horses, Carriages, and Buggies always on hand for Sale. Entire satisfaction guaranteed to all who patronize us. The notice seems to be a running advertisement. The Rome Daily Courier of August 31, 1882, has this advertisement: Livery & Sales Stable/by/James M. Harrison/At the Old Whiteley Stand.

The Rome Directory of 1883 shows the Harrison stables at 86 Broad Street so William apparently sold this business in 1881/1882. In 1883, the directory listed W. L. as "merchant." Dean explained also that 243, 245, and 247 Broad Street were associated with William Whitely. There was a mercantile business and an undertaking business that later developed into Daniel & Son. He and a son-in-law had a store, Whitely & Hill, which became Hill & Owens [Hill and his son-in-law] and then Owens-King which is still in existence. 245 Broad was owned by Whitely descendants until recently. In 1879 William was elected to the city council for a four-year term from 2nd Ward. At one time he ran for Mayor. He was president of the school board at the time of his death and a Tribute of the Board letter was sent to his widow expressing the appreciation and esteem of the Board. The Myrtle Hill Interment Book gives the reason of death as "paralysis."

In 1880, W. L. Whitely had signed the Interment Book as Chairman of the Cem. Com. for Myrtle Hill. The family lived near Shorter College when it was under construction in the 1870's (Elma's papers). The Rome City Directory of 1880-81 gives the residence as "R. R. 2 n of Elm." They may have attended Trinity Methodist Church since Susie's obituary shows that she joined that church "as a young girl." Trinity was founded about 1876, renamed Second Methodist in 1888,
then renamed Trinity about 1914-16. One of Trinity's first pastors was the famous evangelist Sam Jones. His name is mentioned as a revival preacher in some of the family letters. William and Jane are buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery, not far from the burial place of Louise Axson Wilson.

In Battey's History of Rome, Battey writes about the 1886 flood: "Fourth Ward is completely under water...Mrs. W. L. Whitely escaped with her life only." I am not sure where she was living at the time since she had been a widow only a year. In 1898-99, she "boarded" with her daughter's (Susie Hill) family at 519 Avenue A. At the time of the flood, Elma was only 16 (perhaps at Shorter?) and the article did not mention her or the other children.

There is a court case on record which shows an almost futile attempt to collect part of their inheritance which Ike had invested in risky ventures with the expectation, he maintained, of increasing its value.

Rebecca Jane died at age 83 of "old age," according to the Myrtle Hill Interment Book. The children were born in Russell County, Alabama, near Columbus, Georgia, except for Elma Day Whitely who was born in Rome, Georgia.
