Maj. Phillip CLAYTON of Catalpa

1702 - 1786

ID Number: I4118

Father: Samuel CLAYTON Sr.
Mother: Elizabeth PENDLETON

Family 1 : Anne COLEMAN
  1. +Lucy CLAYTON
  2.  Philip CLAYTON Jr.
  3. +Elizabeth Anne CLAYTON
  4.   CLAYTON
  5. +Susan CLAYTON

Notes

Philip's will admitted to probate 21 Mar 1786. (WB C, p. 245, Culpeper Co. Records). his home was called "Catalpa", legend says the name was for a species of tree Philip brought from Essex Co. (Slaughter's History of St. Mark's Parish, Pt. II, p 6) (The Pendleton Family by Mrs. Katherine Cox Gattschalk, Washington DC and Major John B. C. Nicklin, Chattanooga, TN).

CONFLICT: He was married to Anne COLEMAN (daughter of Robert COLEMAN and Sarah CLAYTON) about 1720. Anne COLEMAN was born about 1702.
I've never found a Robert Coleman who married a Sarah Clayton. A brother of Thomas who married Mary Lort was Robert Coleman who married Mary Clayton. See p. 145. Robert himself wrote the date of his marriage to Mary Clayton in his notebook.

"Catalpa: This name has been historical from having been the scene of the first encampment of the Minute Men and by being applied to a district in the county.

The place, now owned by Mr. J. C. Bell, was the seat of Major Philip Clayton, in Colonial times, and was named from a Catalpa tree, transplanted by him from Essex. He married the sister of Robert Coleman, on whose land Culpeper was built in 1759, and called Fairfax, which was its legal title before the Civil War. The first trustees of the town were: Nat. Pendleton, Wm. Green, Wm. Williams, Thomas Slaughter and Philip Clayton. Ben Davis had leased the land from Coleman, and hence the names Davis and Coleman streets. One of the daughters of P. Clayton married Nat. Pendleton, whose son, Nat., was a Minute Man in Culpeper, afterwards aide to Gen'l Greene, and was the second of Alexander Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr. He was the ancestor of Geo. H. Pendleton, who was minister to Berlin. Another daughter of Clayton married Wm. Williams, the father of Gen'l James, Maj. John, Philip and Wm. Clayton Williams, from whom a numerous progeny has descended. Another daughter married Col. James Slaughter, the father of Captain P. Slaughter, who was born at Catalpa, December, 1758. He was living with his grandfather and going to school here to Adam Goodlet, master of the first classical school ever in Culpeper to that date, when the Minute Men met in Clayton's old field (Catalpa) in 1775."

ALEXANDER IRVINE 9th Earl of Drum

ABT 1570 - ____

ID Number: I6488

  • OCCUPATION: Mbr Of Court Of High Commission
  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • BIRTH: ABT 1570
  • RESOURCES: See: [S11] [S446]

Family 1 : MARION DOUGLAS of Buchan
  1. +MARGARET IRVINE of Buchan
  2. +ALEXANDER IRVINE 10th Lord of Drum
  3.  ROBERT IRVINE

Notes

"Possibly the oldest occupied castle in Scotland, Drum Castle in Aberdeenshire, was home to the Irvine family for more than six and a half centuries, a full twenty-four generations of nearly unbroken succession. The original tower keep, standing seventy feet from base to battlement and fifty feet on a side with walls twelve feet thick at the base is thought to have been built during the reign of Alexander III in the mid-thirteenth century. While the architect of the Tower of Drum is unknown the work is generally attributed to Richard Cementarius, the first provost of Aberdeen. Several prominent interior features of the tower are identical to other structures that are known to be the work of Cementarius and so Drum Tower is credited to him as well. The rambling stone mansion and Jacobean house that now surround the original tower were built during the reign of Alexander, the 9th Laird of Drum and completed in 1619."
