My ggrandmother was Theressa Hennis. She was married to Walker Gann. Theressa's father was James Winfield Hennis who was brother to Celia Hennis. Their parents were Benjamin T. Hennis and Hester ? Don' have her last name yet. Would love to know more about your side of the family. Tommy Patterson Reidsville, N.C.

Bill Vernon, who for years ran the Vernon family Association, believed Celia's father was Benjamin T. Hennis. Benjamin probably came from Maryland, as did other families in the area.

  • RESIDENCE: of Westmoreland Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 24 Apr 1790, Westmoreland Co.,Virginia,,"Hickory Hill"

Father: Catesby JONES
Mother: Letitia Corbin TURBERVILLE

Family 1 : Mary Walker CARTER of "Richmond Hill"

Notes

"Catesby's uncle, Thomas ap Catesby Jones, was an influential USN Commodore. He signed the first US treaty with the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1824 and left a significant pro-US sentiment. He is perhaps most known for his misunderstanding that the US was at war with Mexico in 1842 and siezed Monterey (California) for a day."
Children:
Meriwether Patterson JONES
Mary Lee JONES
Mark Catesby JONES
Martha Corbin JONES

The Commodore commanded a small "fleet" at Lake Pontchatrain in New Orleans in 1814. He was able to delay the British landing and enabled Andrew Jackson to gather his forces.

Subsequently, he stopped dueling in the U.S. Navy. He helped negotiate the treaty with the Hawaiians which gave the United States the islands. He then commanded the Pacific Squadron in 1842. He captured Monterey, California, from the Spanish who held Mexico at that time on receiving the erroneous information that war existed between the U.S. and Mexico. There is a plaque honoring is event in Monterey Harbor.

---Jones (1891), p. 75. He entered the navy on 22 Nov 1805, and became lieutenant 24 May, 1812, commander 28 March, 1820, and captain 11 March 1829. From 1808 till 1812 he was engaged in the Gulf of Mexico where he was succesful in suppressing piracy, smuggling, and the slave-trade. When the British naval expedition against N.O. entered Lake Borgne in 1814 he endeavored to intercept forty British boats with his small flotilla. Although wounded and compelled to surrender, his conduct was much praised.

--Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography

"Commodore Jones commanded the Pacific Fleet for many years.
In 1826, Jones concluded the treaty between King Kauikeaouli of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and the United States. This initial treaty with Hawaii granted most favored trade status to Hawaii and granted protection to U.S. ships.
He captured and released Monterey, CA, in 1842. Another mention can be found in this history of the Republic of California
A number of references are made to him in the index to the California History, California Historical Society
Two letters are in the Navy Department Library.
A letter (April 1826) is from Jones to William Tudor regarding differences in expenses in Peru.
A letter (February 1845) from the Secretary of the Navy to Jones regarding Jones's interest in the Territorial Government of Oregon.
Library of Congress books involving Thomas ap Catesby Jones
Name references of Thomas ap Catesby Jones in the LOC.
A book with appendicies by Thomas ap Catesby Jones (Log of United States and about Monterey from Pacific Squadron Letters).

His nephew, Catesby ap Roger Jones, refers to him numerous in his private journal.
A reference is made to him in Military History of the West, Fall 1994 (Vol. 24 No. 1)
A description of the presentation of swords on Feb. 22, 1841, to Thomas ap Catesby Jones and his brother Roger Jones, in "Southern literacy messenger; devoted to every department of literature and the fine arts" Vol. 7, Issue 4 entitled "Honors to the Brave"
He is mentioned repeatedly in his nephew Catesby ap Roger Jones's Private Journal."

Thomas ap Catesby Jones (abt 1790-1858) served a long and distinguished career in the US Navy. As a young Lieutenant during the War of 1812, he was in command of the gunboat flotilla on Lake Borgne (article 1, article 2) which was wiped out by a numerically superior British force during the Battle of New Orleans. In 1826 he was a principal signer of the treaty (article 1, article 2) giving the US access to Hawaii. In 1842 he was Commodore of the Pacific Fleet; mistakenly believing that the US and Spain were at war, he captured Monterey CA one day, apologized and returned the garrison to the Spanish the next day. Jones was the grandson of Sally Skelton and Col.Thomas Jones (1726-1785/6). Sally was the daughter of Jane Meriwether
(M133) and James Skelton, MD. Jane was the daughter of Francis Meriwether II (M13) and Mary Bathurst. Quite a number of the descendants of Thomas & Sally Jones had careers in the US and CS military, army and navy.

His Obit appeared in The Democrat, date of death Apr 14 1907: "The old line of gray is getting thinner and thinner and soon they all will have crossed the river to rest under the shadow of the trees. Amongst those who recently joined the immortal spirits of Lee, Jackson, and Beauregard and a host of other departed soldiers of the Confederacy, was Capt. R. Y. L. McCants"

"Booth,Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Commands, New Orleans, 1920."

McCants, R. Y. E., Capt. Norwood's Co. Cav. (Jeff Davis Rangers) La. Mil. Appears on List not dated. Norwood's Co.,Capt. J. J., La. Mil. Jeff Davis Rangers, Ind.

"The Roster" only has two entries that even come close:
McCants, R. Y. Bradford's Corps Scouts & Guards, Co. A McCants, R. Y. E. (sic) LA Mil Cav (Jeff Davis Rangers) Norwood's Co.

Since no rank is given, that means these were privates. Bradford's Corps Scouts & Guards, was a regular Confederate army unit better known as Bradford's Infantry Battalion, commanded by Major J. D. Bradford. It was organized with two companies in August 1864.
