Notes

"I shall spare the reader the details of Bartholomew's flight with his recently acquired bride, Susanne Lavillon, to Germany whence after some years of residence he passed through Holland into England. Here Bartholomew and his family remained for a short time and in 1699 under the "commission and providing" of King William came to America. A partial list of the families accompanying the Du Puys on their voyage to this country has been preserved and includes the following names: Dameron, Tribue, Flournoy, Meaux, Maury, Bowdoin, Latiné, Du Valls, Jarnette and Clay. The last mentioned is said to have been the only English family in the group. Some of these names have been so changed in spelling and pronunciation during the two centuries that have elapsed since their coming to this country that recognition is often quite impossible. My mother's family name, Dameron, has undergone the least change and this is now sometimes spelled without the e.
This group of French Huguenots located temporarily on the James River, about seventeen miles above Richmond, and in the family record this location is given the name of "Monacon," though the name has different spellings in the chronicles. However, this was only a temporary resting place and the families soon dispersed throughout Virginia and North Carolina.

So nearly as I can trace my direct ancestral line the first three American generations lived in Hanover County, Virginia. Here Joseph Dameron was born, grew up and married Mary Ball. This name has given the family opportunity to claim relationship with Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington. The claim, so far as I know, is founded upon nothing more than the name and the proximity of the families. Joseph Dameron was a revolutionary soldier and was wounded at Guilford Court House. After the war he moved to Dinwiddie County and later "down on the Dan river." One of his sons, my great-grandfather, George Ball Dameron (1771-1848), married Mary Moore (1781-1870), who lived to the advanced age of eighty-nine, preserving much of her physical and mental alertness to the end. I knew her, rode and drove with her, and listened with great eagerness to her stories of the family. My other - on my mother's side was Mary Clay, "a daughter of Edward C. Clay, whose father was a brother of Reverend John Clay, the father of Henry Clay." This good lady gave me in my boyhood days "Henry Clay's whiskey glass" which I still possess, but it has long been void of the ancient beverage. Probably it is one of the many glasses from which this illustrious statesman took his toddy.

From the autobiography of the late James P. Dameron (my mother's brother) of San Francisco, published privately in 1877, I take the following:

"Edward C. Clay's wife was a Tribue, whose mother was a daughter of Count Bartholomew Du Puy, one of those noble and great men who, with his accomplished wife disguised as a page, fled from home and country rather than abjure their religious faith and escaped from France to Germany where they resided fourteen years and then went to England and stayed two years, and then emigrated to Virginia in 1699 or 1700 and settled at a place called Monican Town, some twenty miles above Richmond on the James River."

From the same source I make the following extracts concerning two of my ancestors: "Joseph Dameron was a large, fine looking man and a school teacher by profession but kept a farm for his family to live on. He had five sons and three daughters. He was in the Revolutionary War under Captain Rainey and was at the Battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina."

William PENN Of Penn's Lodge

1609 - 1676

ID Number: I1837

Father: (Research Query) PENN of Maryland

Family 1 : Elizabeth MARKHAM?
  1. +John PENN I
  2. +Edward of Maryland PENN Sr. "the Immigrant"

Notes

"William Penn, son of George, died testate in Ireland in 1676. His will appears to have been lost when the Public Record Office in Dublin was burned in 1922. But among the Albert Cook Myers Papers on deposit in the Chester Co. Historical Society at West Chester, PA, is a short abstract of the will, made by Mr. Myers before WW I . The Will of William Penn of Kingsalle, Co. Cork, Ireland, dated 27 April 1676; Probated 21 July 1676."

"Will of William Penn of Kingsalle, Co Cork, Ireland, "taken Sicke in Boddey" [dated] 27 April 1676....

To said W P "2 shuts of clothes" & my Buffe Bellt wth silver Buckels & one Sworde & on Scarffe of sillke with gould & silver" [illegible] & 2 pair of sillke stockings" & "my silver watch" 2 fowling pieces a case of small pistols, "on cloke & longe coate & hatte" etc.

Rest of goods to "Joane Penn my wiffe" [my] extrx.
Witt: Will: Bishop
/s/ Wm Penn
Probated 21 July 1676

There is also a Cash Book kept by William Penn's steward, Philip Ford, which lists itemized expenses of his employer during the years 1672 to 1680. Among the items in this book are entries of payments made in accordance with the Admiral's will, and miscellaneous payments to other relatives. There is an entry which seems to prove his "Cousen Markham" undoubtedly was the Founder's own first cousin, later his deputy governor in Pennsylvania.

"William Penn, "son of George Penn late of the fforest of Brayden in the County of Wilts gent Deceased," was bequeathed £10 in the 1670 will of Admiral Sir William Penn. He was the Admiral's first cousin, son of the Admiral's uncle George Penn who was a brother of Giles Penn, the Admiral's father."

"In addition to the usual bequests to his immediate family, Admiral Sir William Penn also bequeathed money to other relatives, among them his nephew William Markham, to whom he left £10 sterling, his nephew George Markham, to whom he devised £ 5 sterling."

Lived in London and emigrated to VA. CONFLICT: "I also have the account which says that William Penn of Penn's Lodge (1609-1676). I found a copy of his will in Kinsale, Ireland in the English records and a copy of his will in Maryland. First, each of these wills is written 20 Sept. 1696. It is proved in Canterbury Court (date in Latin which I read to be sometime in 1697). It is proved in Charles Co., MD on 9 Oct. 1696.

Each will mentions a wife, Elizabeth, as executor and his three sisters. No children are mentioned. The witnesses are ? Markham, ? Wright, and ? Greenfield. Now it gets confusing. There is no evidence that the William Penn who died in 1696 had any connection with Kinsale, Ireland. There is a William Penn who died testate in Kinsale, Ireland in 1676, however, his will was destroyed during the Irish revolution in or about 1922 and only an index listing the will survives.

Which William Penn is the William who was born in 1609? Which William Penn was the one who married Elizabeth Markham? Which William Penn purportedly had a son name John Penn who married Lucy Granville? Which William Penn, if either, was a direct descendant of the Penns of Caroline Co., VA? Since the William Penn who died in 1696 does not mention any children in his will, I tend to doubt that he was the father of John Penn or marriage Lucy Granville or the Penns of Caroline Co., VA. I just don't think that a William Penn who was born in 1609 could be the grandfather of our Caroline Co., VA Penns who were born between 1700-1720.

Here are my early William Penn references in Virginia:
1. On 22 Feb. 1652 a William Penn was imported to Virginia by Theo. Hoans, Gent. who got 720 acres on the N. side of Rappahonock River, near Lawson's Creek.

2. On 16 March 1657 John Waller (Walker?) and William Pen received a land patent of 360 acres in Lancaster Co., VA.

3. The Bristol Register has an entry for 26 Sept. 1672 which says that William Penn left Bristol for VA on this date. He was an indentured servant of William Sanders.

4. On 20 Sept 1683 there is a reference in James City Co., VA of 12 acres of land being patented to William Briscoe, referred to a "land which William Pen dyed seized of and was found to excheat by inquisition under Col. John Page, Exchecker & Co." My comment to this is that this William Penn could be the William Penn who died in Kinsale, Ireland in 1676.

Data I have on Markham indicates that some of the material may be accurate it states the questioned genealogy of Joseph Penn. In the material is information that Elizabeth Markham who was born in 1655 was involved in the administration of the estate of William Penn, deceased, in Charles Co., MD in 1753.

The Markham account suggests that this is a continuation of the administration of the estate of the William Penn who died in 1696. I think this is unlikely (I don't see an estate going on for 57 years). I think that this William Penn in the next generation at least and may not be directly related to the William Penn who died in 1696.

Further evidence of this is that the Elizabeth who was the executor of the will in 1696 would not be referred to as an "administrator" of the same will later. An executor and an adminstrator have two different meanings (I am an attorney and know that an executor is a person named to administrate an estate in a will and an administrators is a person not named to administrate an estate in a will but appointed to administrate the estate, either with the will annexed or of a person who died without a will).

If this William Penn was married to Elizabeth Markham, then the account that said that the William Penn who was born in 1609 married Elizabeth Markham was wrong, regardless of whether this William Penn was the one who died in Kinsale, Ireland in 1676 or the one who died in 1696. I think the Markham connection is a red herring with respect to the Penn family which connects with the Penns of New Kent Co., King & Queen Co. and Caroline Co., VA."
