p. 346: James McCants ID: 2846; Spouse: Agnes McNeally; children: James, Thomas, (Three Others); Date in Pee Dee: 1740; Last Date: 1772 Died; Location: Williamsburg; Source: Moore, RBPPFW; Notes: Married 1 July 1740 at parish of Prince Federick Winyaw.
A planter who raised rice and indigo inheriting 250 Plantation acres within the Township of Williamsburgh. It is generally agreed that he arrived with his father in South Carolina about 1720-1730. He was born before 1713 and is believed to have been 18-20 years old when he arrived in America from Ireland. He was made Justice of the Peace for Craven Co. in April 1768 and as such was a King's Officer.

On Mar 23 & 24 1759, James McCants, Planter, of Craven County for L 500 Currency, conveyed to Alexander McKnight, Planter, of Craven County, 250 Acres in Williamsburgh Township, Craven County, bounding NE on the Township, other sides on vacant land, also a half Acre Lot # 252, in said town, which tract and lot were granted by Lt. Govenor William Bull on July 5, 1740 to David McCants, Sr. The city of Kingstree that we know now was originally the town of Williamsburgh.

On June 20, 1764, James McCants witnessed an agreement drawn between James Cooper and Daniel and Sarah Money regarding two tracts of land formerly belonging to William and Sarah Gardner.

Then on May 4, 1765, Robert Pringle and Frederick Grimke, Esquires, of Charleston, conveyed to James McCants, of Williamsburgh Township, for L 150 Currency to Pringle and 5 Shillings to Grimke; 350 Acres in Williamsburgh, Craven county, originally granted William Turbeville June 26, 1736; bounding SE on Margaret Barrs and other sides on vacant land.

On April 10, 1767 and December 1, 1770, conveyances of real property were made before James McCants, Justice of the Peace. There are other deeds recorded during this time period referring to property bounding on lands of James McCants. It has not been determined whether he owned land in addition to the two tracts and lot mentioned above. The exact location of these properties has not been identified either, however, the tracts appear to be the Plantations referred to in his will.

A deed from James McCants, Esq. to Thomas McCants, both of Prince Frederick Parish, 350 acres in Williamsburg, Craven Co. for 540 pounds, was executed Jan. 23, 1772 shortly before he died. Prince Frederick's Parish at this time was a part of Williamsburg Dist.

James' will, (Will Bk 1771-1774, p. 133) dated Mar. 3, 1772 was apparently written on his death bed as it was proved Mar.19 the same year. It is headed Williamsburg township, county of Craven, SC. It was witnessed by John Leslie, William Scretch and Thomas Commander. (Thomas was a grandson of Samuel Commander and nephew of Dorothy who had married John McCants. See notes on Thomas Commander). "it is my will that my five sons who are severally indebted to me the sum of four hundred pounds each shall pay annually to my youngest son James the lawful interest of the same during the next five years after my decease, at the expiring of which term the principal shall become the property of these my five sons as it was to them lent..." He willed his Plantation to his youngest son James "at the expiring of my wife's widowhood" naming his son Thomas McCants, and his two son-in-laws James Lindsay and Robert Winter executors.

Inventory: pistols, books, saddlebags, desk, trunk and padlock, cupboard and tea furniture, pewter knives and forks, indigo vats and seeds, two slaves Scipio and Joe, "sundry goods brought from Town, not taken to the House but stored." Total: 2833 pounds.

CONFLICT in names of wives & some children:
His fifth son was probably named David.
estimates that Agnes McNeely is the mother of Thomas, and that Martha Jean Scott is the mother of his ancestor, and most likely all of the other children.
It is likely that James the youngest was the son of the 3rd wife, Agnes Donnald.
James McCants m. Martha Jackson (Widow of William Jackson) 1761 of Prince Frederick's Parish, Craven Co. (Vol LL p. 485-486).
TheDeHay book describes James wives, the 1st as Agnes DONNALLY mother of all children; 2nd Martha JACKSON, no children; and last Agnes MUNNERLYN.
Webber Collection shows James McCants of Pr. Fred., Wmbg married Agnes Monalin in 1740; James, son of David, b 1719 d 1772, J. P. Craven married (1) Agnes Monneally, (2) Martha Jackson before Jun 1761, (3) Agnes Donally in 1770. M'Kants--James McKants and Agnes Moneally married July ye 1st 1740.
From Dr. E. C. McCants: at 28 James married Agnes Munnerlyn in 1740. (the Munnerlyns lived between Kingstree & Georgetown, near the Goteas. 2 of his sons m. Gotea sisters. jlb)
The Mabel Trott Fitzsimons' McCants notes, SC Hist. Soc.: James McCants married Agnes McKnealy 1740, next Martha Jackson, next Agnes Donnald.

There is no proven record of James McCants sons, it is generally conceded that they were: Thomas, Nathaniel, David, William, and James. Whether the other son was Samuel or Alexander cannot be proven. A Samuel McCants of Turkey Creek, Sumter Dist. made a will, May 1, 1817, leaving everything to his sisters. Will Book AA, Page 172, Probate Court, Charleston, SC.

The Will of James McCants: South Carolina
In the name of God Amen: I, James McCants of Williamsburgh Township in the County of Craven and province aforesaid, Planter, being very sick and weak in body, of perfect mind and memory, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. That is to say first I give and bequeath to Agnes, my dearly beloved wife, the sum of Seven Hundred pounds lawful money of the province aforesaid to be raised and levied out of my estate together with the use of my house and furniture and my cleared lands during the continuance of her widowhood. Also, I give and bequeath to my well loved son James McCants, my two negroes SCIPIO and JOE.
It also is my will that my five sons who are severally indebted to me the sum of Four Hundred pounds shall pay annually to my youngest son James, the lawful interest of the same during the next five years after my decease, at the expiring of which term the principal shall become the property of these my five sons as it was to them lent, and at the expiring of my wife's widowhood, my Plantation and all my estate, real and personal undisposed of shall descend to my youngest son James and to his heirs forever. Also, I do hereby constitute and ordain my son Thomas McCants and my two sons in law James Lindsay and Robert Winter the executors of this my Last Will and Testament to whom I recommend it, to aver payment to be made and all my just and lawful debts as soon as possible after my decease. I, also, hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every former Wills and Testaments, Legacies and bequeaths by me in any wise willed, named and bequested ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of March, Anno One Thousand and seven hundred and seventy-two.
James McCants

Signed, sealed, published pronounced and declared by the said James McCants as his Last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names. John Leslie, William Scretch and Thomas Commander.

Proved by virtue of a dedimus from his Excellency the Govenor dated 19th March, 1772, to Thomas T. Scottoive at the same time qualified James Lindsay, Executory to said Will.

"James McCants, thought to be the son of David and grandson of Andrew Cant, came to America about 1720 from near Newtonnards, County Down, Ireland. As previously mentioned, he is thought to have been about eighteen years of age when he came to America with his father, although some members of the family hold that David did not come to America or that James was his son. He settled on Black Mingo Creek in Craven County and had six sons and two daughters by the three wives of which we know." "A Traditional McCants Family History 1590 - 1988" by B. Theron McCants. (Self-published)

"A planter who raised rice and indigo inheriting 250 Plantation acres within the Township of Williamsburgh. It is generally agreed that he arrived with his father in South Carolina about 1720-1730. He was born before 1713 and is believed to have been 18-20 years old when he arrived in America from Ireland. He was made Justice of the Peace for Craven Co. in April 1768 and as such was a King's Officer.

A deed from James McCants, Esq. to Thomas McCants, both of Prince Frederick Parish, 350 acres in Williamsburg, Craven Co. for 540 pounds, was executed Jan. 23, 1772 shortly before James died.
James' will, (Will Bk 1771-1774, p. 133) dated 3 Mar 1772 was apparently written on his death bed as it was proved 19 Mar the same year. It was witnessed by John Leslie, William Scretch and Thomas Commander. (Thomas was a grandson of Samuel Commander and nephew of Dorothy who had married John McCants. See notes on Thomas Commander). "it is my will that my five sons who are severally indebted to me the sum of four hundred pounds each shall pay annually to my youngest son James the lawful interest of the same during the next five years after my decease, at the expiring of which term the principal shall be come the property of these my five sons as it was to them lent..." He willed his Plantation to his youngest son James "at the expiring of my wife's widowhood" naming his son Thomas McCants, and his two son-in-laws James Lindsay and Robert Winter executors.

His fifth son was probably named David.

"Re: the McCants Line - David McCants, wife Elizabeth, and son James came from SCT in 1730 and lived in the Williamsburg, Kingstree area. He died in 1742 (we have 1759) and his will was proved in the Charleston District but could not be found in Abstracts of SC Wills for years 1740-1760. There is no mention of other children.

James McCants, the son of Elizabeth and David McCants, (1712-1772), served as King's Officer--Justice of the Peace Craven County now Williamsburg County (ref. Register book Prince Frederick Parish p. 52); Colonial Dames of SC accept descendants of James McCants on his record as King George's Justice.

He was married 1740 to Agnes DONNALLY and there were six children. His second marriage in 1761 was to Martha JACKSON, widow of William Jackson; no children are mentioned and no children born to James and Martha. He was married a third time to Agnes MUNNERLYN d. 1782. James McCants' will left all property to Agnes and beloved son James.

Various records in Misc. Book 1767-1771 show that James McCants of Priince Frederick Par. sells to Robt. Winter and James Lindsay two negroes each. Note: James McCants literally gives the above negroes to his two sons-in-law as his two daughters' portions of his estate and puts it "sells" and price of each so other heirs cannot claim them as part of his estate at his death.

This book shows 7 children of James McCants:
Mary m. James Lindsay
Jean m. Robert Winter
Son returned to SCT
Son returned to SCT

James the son of Agnes Munnerlyn in Rev War, but was not living in 1790, according to census.
Nathaniel m. Elizabeth Gautier; two children Robert - no records;
Jean m. James McCants, son of Thomas McCants.
Thomas 1741-1830, son of Agnes DONNALLY m. Anne Reed in 1778. His son James McCants m. in 1805 his cousin Jean McCants (one of the twins born in 1779 to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Gautier.)

There are vague but persistent indications that Thomas McCants, son of James and Agnes Donnally, had a son named Nathaniel McCants as well as a brother Nathaniel who married Elizabeth Gautier.

It is known that a dau of John and Elizabeth Cockfield de Hay named Elizabeth married a McCants (as did her sister Ann). Her probable birthdate was 1760/1770. A son is named John (her father); Jean (sister of Thomas McCants; David (Thomas' grandfather) and Elizabeth (name of mother and grandmother). James is the name of another son of Thomas McCants, and James Packer is evidently the husband of daughter Elizabeth."

1. There is supposedly an old McCants family cemetary on Holmes swamp, which is in the Cedar Swamp community a few miles east of Kingstree, SC.
Nobody seems to know exactly where the old place is. This community is the home of my grandfather and most of the ancestral lands of many connections.

2. There is also a McCants cemetary on the south side of Black River about 10 miles southeast of Kingstree, the location of which is known. However, I have not been there. Some of the info I have records gravesites there. [S985] [S11] [S446] [S316] [S11] [S306] [S540] [S13] [S306] [S316] [S615] [S316] [S615]
