KIMBRO -- KIMBROUGH GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY is source of the following
*************************
Children of Marmaduke and Mary Kimbrough

Ormond Kimbrough was our ancestor. He was born on January 30, 1768, in Rowan County, North Carolina. He was the son of Marmaduke and Mary Turner Kimbrough. His date of birth is shown in the Church of England Prayer Book originally owned by his brother, George.

Ormond was only about 18 months old when his father died. At about the age of 13 he got a step-father, John Allen. In 1781, his mother's brothers, Elias and Roger Turner were removed as his guardians because they had "removed and attached themselves to the Enemies of the U S by taking up arms against same and not having discharged trust reposed in them by Testator." They were replaced by Joseph Williams. Ormond was only 13 at the time. His fathers will stated, "I give and bequest unto my son Armband Kimbrough the place whereon I now live called ShallowFord together with two improvements of land adjoining the above said tract to him and his heirs forever." Ormond and his half-brother, John were the only two children of Marmaduke to inherit land from their father. Ormond's was the "homeplace", and on the land he inherited is located the Kimbrough Family Cemetery.

According to a letter written by Dr. M. D. Kimbrough, grandson of George, from Mockville North Carolina on January 24, 1901, "your gr. grandfather was named Ormond and lived on the east side on the Yadkin River in site of the Ford. His farm your grandmother and family sold to Col R. C. Puryear and now owned mostly by his heirs and is located on it the Kimbrough grave yard as it is known." This information is verified by another descendant interested in genealogy, Rev. M. K. Thornton. He wrote on June 28, 1907, "...Ormond Kimbrough settled on the Yadkin River in Surry county, North Carolina in the late 1700s.

He married Elizabeth Davie of Surry or Stokes County. Marriage bond No. 000145757, County of Surry, State of North Carolina was issued Ormond and Elizabeth Davie on October 13, 1795. M. D. Kimbrough was the bondsman. Elizabeth Davie was the daughter of James and Sarah Hays Davie. From this marriage three children were born; one son Marmaduke, and two daughters, Sarah and Mary. Sally Howard, daughter of Benjamin and Polly Kimbrough Howard (our ancestors) wrote: "my great grandmother was Sally Hase or Hass or Haas who married a Mr. Davie. He died. she then married a Mr. Sivit or Swit. A child by her first husband was my grandmother, Elizabeth Davie, who married Ormond Kimbrough." Elizabeth died on April 29, 1802, after having 3 children. She is buried in the Kimbrough Cemetery in present Forsyth County.

Ormond soon remarried Millie Patillo. Millie Patillo, born between 1770 and 1780, was born in Scotland. She and Ormond were married about 1800, in Rowan County, North Carolina. Family tradition says that the children were very fond of their step-mother, and this is verified by the fact that her step-daughter, Mary (our ancestor), named her oldest daughter Mary Patillo Howard. In 1830, Millie was living in Macon County, North Carolina in the household of her son, George Henry, and his wife. In M. D. Kimbrough's letter he says, "Duke went to Alabama about 1820 and was back about 1830 and carried back with him his brother George and mother, aunt Millie as she was called. I think her maiden name was Patillo..." It is not known when Millie died.

At this time there is only one indication as to the date of death of Ormond. It is a bill of sale dated January 1, 1819 signed by George Kimbrough and Peter Clingerman as Administrators of the estate of Armon Kimbrough (sic). According to this document a Negro man, named Grand Peter, was sold at public auction to Benjamin Howard for $456 as part of the estate settlement. This would indicate Ormond died in about 1818. His burial place is not certain, but is probably the Kimbrough Family Cemetery in present Forsyth County. It is located on high ground overlooking the Yadkin River and the Shallowford, on land owned first by Marmaduke, Sr. and passed to his son Ormond in his will.

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001. Wyatt, Sir Francis 1588–1644, English colonial governor of Virginia. Married to a niece of Sir Edwin Sandys of the London Company, he went to Virginia as governor in 1621, taking with him the first written constitution for an English colony.

In 1622 he had to face a disastrous attack by Native Americans that took the lives of some 350 settlers. Virginia became a royal colony in 1624, but Wyatt, at the crown’s request, stayed on as governor until 1626, when Sir George Yeardley, whom he had succeeded, resumed the office. He was governor again from 1639 until 1642, when he was replaced by Sir William Berkeley.

Upon his arrival in the Colony, he organized the first Legislative body, known as the "General Assembly of Virginia."

By the disloyalty in the Colony, the London Co., deposed Sir Francis Wyatt, but King Charles I. took the government of the Colony into his own hands, and at once reappointed Sir Francis Wyatt, who retained the office of Governor. It was during his administration that the terrible Indian Massacre occurred, in 1622, and in 1625, he fought a battle with the Indians, commanding the Virginians in person; the battle took place on the York and Pamunkey Rivers; he served as Governor from 1621 to 1627, when he returned to England to settle up his father's estate, and upon his return to the Colony in 1639, he was again appointed Governor, and served until 1641. He was also an influential member of the King's Council, and was a supporter of the Established Church. He was the first to change the spelling from Wiatt to Wyatt; he m.
