Samuel HODGES

ABT 1780 - 1861

ID Number: I45157

  • RESIDENCE: FL; Effingham Co GA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1780, East Florida
  • DEATH: 1861, Effingham Co GA
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1629] [S2546] [S2547]
Father: William? HODGES (Sr.?)

Family 1 : Jane BLACK
  1. +Philip R. HODGES
  2.  Sarah Jane HODGES
  3.  Ambrose HODGES
Family 2 : Margaret Ann GRAHAM

Notes

Query: In the library at Sylvania GA I found an abstract of Screven Co GA Deed Book T p 391: which has Phillip R. HODGES of "Salime" (prob. Sabine) Parish LA, formerly of Screven Co GA, appointing [his first cousin] Hardy HODGES as his attorney to receive his share of the estate of his mother [Jane BLACK HODGES b c 1780-1785 GA m c 1805 divorced 1826-1829 d c 1862 Screven Co GA] on 18 Nov 1862.

He is also mentioned in the 1850 will of his father (Samuel HODGES b 1780-1782 East FL m2 1840 Effingham Co GA d 1861 Effingham Co GA -- who left one dollar each to the five childen by his m1), but no location is indicated for him.

From: JohnRobert Peavy jrpv@netzero.net November 09, 2002: "Samuel HODGES [b 1780-1782, settled in Screven Co GA then Effingham Co GA after his divorce in 1839].
Samuel HODGES' will of 1850 (probated 1861) names his five children by his m1 (Jane BLACK NEALIN HODGES CHARLTON), including the youngest, Ambrose HODGES (b c 1820 -- my wife is descended from Ambrose's sister Sarah Jane HODGES SHEPPARD b c 1810).

"That Samuel HODGES's eldest son (Phillip HODGES b c 1805) was in LA by 1827 to be married to a local (Amite MS/St. Helena LA) girl by a J.P. (Robert HODGES) who appears to be part of the family of John HODGES & Ann STANDARD could be a coincidence -- or it could hint at some relationship. And that latter clan, having Elias as a family name, may be related to FAMILY THREE."

"Incidentally, Isaac HODGES' uncle, Samuel HODGES, m2 Margaret Ann GRAHAM, another daughter of John GRAHAM & Selita CRAWFORD; Margaret already had a natural daughter (b c 1833, the father was James TUTTLE) prior to her m in 1840."

There are so much conflicting info on the early Lewis line that I have no idea what is right!

"The Lewises of Eastern Virginia are of Welsh origin. Their ancestor, General Robert Lewis, of Beacon, Wales, came to Gloucester in 1650 with a grant from the King of 33,333 1/3 acres of land. Robert Lewis had sons, John and Charles. John Lewis and his wife, Lydia, had a son John, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Col. Augustine Warner of Gloucester Co., and built Warner Hall. They had a son, John Lewis, who, with his wife Frances, were parents of Col. Fielding Lewis, who married twice: first, Catherine Washington (aunt of Gen'l George Washington). They were married in 1746. Issue:"

Said to have Married Catherine PHILIP dau of John Tuddwell of DYFFRYM b. abt 1540.

THE WELSH LINEAGE OF JOHN LEWIS (1592-1657), EMIGRANT TO GLOUCESTER, VIRGINIA: Revised Edition. By Grace McLean Moses. Book. (1984), 2002, paper, 68 pp. In this booklet of vital importance to descendants of the Lewis Family, Mrs. Moses shows that the family's Welsh immigrant ancestor was JOHN LEWIS, who settled at Totopotomoys Creek in Gloucester County, Virginia on July l, 1653, and not ROBERT LEWIS, as argued by Merrow Edgerton Sorley in his widely respected Lewis of Warner Hall. #6804CC - $12.50
