  1.  James MCCANTS
  2. +William MCCANTS Jr. Esq.
  3. +Joseph MCCANTS
  4.  Thomas MCCANTS
  5.  Mary MCCANTS

Notes

CONFLICT: Based on information in An old family Bible (Stiles Rivers) indicates to some family members that William's father was James McCants, but this James could not be James McCants, Esq d. 1772.

"William McCants was the son of James McCants an emigrant from IRE abt 1718. James McCants was killed by the fall of a tree and is buried at Burnt church".

This James McCants in the bible record must be a contemporary of David McCants, and could not have been the son of David McCants as David's son, James was married in 1740 and this William was m. in 1753; James, son of the immigrant David, and from legal documents we know that by 1815, he had no son William nor descendants of a son William. There may have been another James of this period but no records have been found.

The William McCants, believed to be the son of James, died about 1763, therefore he would not be one of them. A son of William by the name of William could be one of these, but it is not known which one.

Therefore, the William McCants of Colleton County Area, SC altho claims to be descended from James, the immigrant to Williamsburg, Craven Co., no proof has been found. There were three William McCants in the Rev War. It is possible that William was the first son of James, the emigrant, but he would have been born prior to Agnes McKneely marriage to an unknown wife.

The records of William McCants families of Colleton Co. indicate James McCants to be a contemporary of David McCants.

Possibly the father of William was a brother William of David McCants'. David's son James was abt 20 yrs and would be the James named in Boddie's History. William settled in the St. Bartholomew Dist. His plantation was situated at Round O, near Parker's Ferry. He is the ancestor of the McCants family now located in the Jacksonboro Area, a descendant of his founded the Mt. Pleasant Branch. On Apr 25 1761, John Martin leased and released to Wm McCants 400 acres of land in Colleton Co. for 800 pounds. this land was situated, "Butting on Southwardly on Horse Shoe Road, Westwardly on lands give me by the Presbyterian Congregation at Pon Pon, northwardly on lands of Joseph Glover, eastwardly on lands of John North. Recorded Oct 1 1761. This plantation was near Jacksonboro, opposite Mr. Prentiss and adjoining Mr. Reynolds, where Wm had an extensive and profitable tannery before the revolution.

His sons James, Joseph, William and Thomas were patriots in the American Revolution, and fought under Francis Marion at the "Battle of Parker's Ferry", which occurred directly opposite William McCants Avenue. This battle was called by some "The Battle of McCants Avenue" The youngest son was the scout who watched the movements of the British who camped the night before at Hayne Hall. (Life of Marion, p. 265).

Wm's goods and chattle appraisement was made Aug 2 1763 by Moses Draquier, Adam Culliatt and Robert Keowin. That Wm was a tanner as well as a planter is evidenced by the inv. of his estate.

From: "joyce hetrick"
To: "Josephine Lindsay Bass by way of Carol C-H "

"The following paragraph about William being a "tanner" is probably not quite the way it most likely was. Almost all the plantations kept hides for making shoes and other leather goods on the property for the family and workers. Shoes were made mostly "at home" and were made "generic"--in other words, not for left and right feet, but just shoes. Other types of crude footwear were also made for use in the fields, with good shoes being kept for special occasions. A TANYARD was a big operation and required special knowledge skills and equipment to tan leather. Usually a community of any length of establishment would have a commercial tanyard to tan the leather for the surrounding plantations. If you will go over the inventories of many plantations, you will see that most of the larger ones and even many of the small yeoman farmers had a few hides on the place listed in the inventory". Joyce Hetrick

Hannah, his wife survived until Mar 22 1793, she died intestate and her son Thomas McCants was appointed admin. Abt 10 yrs after Wm's death, Hannah acq property in Colleton Co. Surveyed Jan 7 1737, for Stephen Nichols and then May 21, 1772 granted to Henry Harns. Henry Harns conveyed to Solomon Harper and then to his wife Elinor of Prince Williams Pr. Beaufort, who released 670 acres to Hannah McCants Oct 23 1773 for 1340 pounds current money. (Ref: M.C.O. BK F4, p. 438)

Notes

"Daniel Prillaman came to Virginia with his father Jacob. On January 19, 1778 Daniel Prillaman, together with Dennis O'Briant and John Bryant, "refuseth to take and subscribe the oath or affirmation of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia" (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 9 page 14). This refusal may have been because Of his religious convictions, or because of a stronger allegiance to Germany and England.

On 17 June 1783, Daniel had received a grant of 285 acres in Henry County, on Nicholas Creek adjoining Dennis O'Briant, (Book H page 243, Commonwealth Grants and Patents). Nine years latter, on 10 July 1792, he acquired the plantation of his father-in-law Dennis O'Briant by a deed of gift, consisting of 286 acres on Nicholas Creek, which was then in Franklin County (Franklin Co., Deeds, Book 2, page 414). This land had been granted to Dennis O'Briant in 1769, and latter became the property of Daniel's son David Prillaman.

Daniel acquire other land in the Nicholas Creek section in 1802 and 1803. He bought from Robert Stockton, for $43.00, a tract of 33 acres from Spencer James and Nathaniel Dixon, which was also on Nicholas Creek.

The old home of Daniel Prillaman burned in 1911, at which time the family Bible was also destroyed; the house was rebuilt using the original chimneys. The family cemetery where Daniel and Ann are buried is on the property. Daniel Prillaman lived in the Brown Hill section, while his brother remained on the Blackwater; possibly Daniel moved because of his marriage to Ann O'Briant, whose father was an early settler on Nicholas Creek. One family tradition relates that Daniel had a powder mill near the original family home, and that one day the mill blew up, and Daniel immediately moved to Brown Hill, leaving his brothers behind.

In 1799 he was appointed to supervise the surveys for roads, and was appointed an Overseer of the Poor, as his father had been. He served on juries and transferred lands through the court. At the time of his death in 1854, he was still living on Nicholas Creek. One descendant tells of a slave who was present at the estate sale in 1854, who remembers Daniel's son Dennis repeating, "I'll tell you this one thing--I want Daddy's buck (spotted) horse!"

Daniel Prillaman's will is dated 1845, probated in 1854, and names his wife Ann and ten children. (Reference: Franklin Co., Va. Will Book No. 8, pages 291-292).
