Notes

Aka: Ethelwulf; King of WESSEX, SUSSEX, KENT, ESSEX; reigned 18 years and a half. Aethelwulf, King of England: Aethelwulf, died 1/13/858.

The reign of King Athelwulf (839-58): S. Keynes, 'Anglo-Saxon Entries in the "Liber Vitae" of Brescia', in T31, pp. 99-119 - entries relating to members of the West Saxon and Mercian royal families, and others, apparently on their various ways to Rome in 853 (the Athelings Athelred and Alfred), 855 (King Athelwulf and Alfred) and 874 (King Burgred and Queen Athelswith). J. Booth, 'Monetary Alliance or Technical Co-operation? The Coinage of Berhtwulf of Mercia (840-852)', in M123, pp. 63-103.

"The significance of the role of King Athelwulf in consolidating the work of his predecessors, and in establishing the credentials of the West Saxon monarchy, should not be underestimated. See, e.g. Wormald (F5), pp. 140-2; Kirby (A10), p. 195; Keynes (E31), pp. 40-1; Keynes (F42), p. 62; Smyth (F51), p. 552-3; John (T54), pp. 71-4; and cf. Stenton (A1), pp. 244-5.

Athelwulf was credited with a great victory over a viking army at the battle of Aclea in 851 (ASC). In 853, he brought the Welsh to submission, despatched his son Alfred to Rome (cf. EHD no. 219), and gave his daughter in marriage to Burgred, king of the Mercians (ASC). He instituted a 'decimation' of his land in 854-5. He went to Rome himself, taking Alfred with him, in 855 (ASC; Annals of Saint-Bertin, in Nelson (B606),pp. 80-3; Liber Pontificalis, in Davis, Lives of the Ninth-Century Popes (B600), pp. 186-7), and married Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, on the way back. For the 'first' coronation ordo, see B470. For Athelwulf's difficulties and dispositions after his return from Rome, see Asser (B81), chs. 12-13 and 16. For relations between Wessex and Mercia, see Keynes (F90). For King Athelwulf's ring, see Wilson (B840), no. 31, and A200 no. 243. For the suggestion that Deor is a satire on King Athelwulf, see North, in OEN 29.2 (1996), pp. 35-6. R.H.M. Dolley and K. Skaare, 'The Coinage of Athelwulf, King of the West Saxons', in T20, pp. 63-76."

"M.J. Enright, 'Charles the Bald and Athelwulf of Wessex: the Alliance of 856 and Strategies of Royal Succession', Journal of Medieval History 5 (1979), pp. 291-302; P. Stafford, 'Charles the Bald, Judith, and England' (1981), reptd in Gibson and Nelson (F2), pp. 139-53 - on the politics behind King Athelwulf's marriage to Judith in 856."

"Aethelwulf reigned 839-858, "chiefly occupied with struggles against the Danes" {-Encycl.Brit., 1956 Ed. 1:276}. In 855 went to Rome with Alfred; on way home married Judith, daughter of Charles the Bold. Aethelwulf ruled Wessex 839-856 (abdicated) and was Under-King of Kent 825-839 and 856-858. His daughter Aethelswith m. (Easter, 853 at Chippenham) Burgred, King of the Mercians (who succeeded Berhtwulf). His third son, Aethelbert, reigned 860-866 (buried at Sherborne)."
