Nov. 16, 1734; was 5 times m.; d. in 1781, at Harewood, Berkley co., Va.; in 1778 was appointed by congress com'r to proceed westward on public business, but declined from ill health, and a successor was appointed. (Sparks's Life and Writings of Washington, p. 550.)

Newport, KY: "George Washington: The great-great-grandson of Samuel Washington, brother of President George Washington, Newport's George Washington was born in Newport in 1844 and served in the Confederate Army. He became an attorney and represented Campbell County in the 1890 convention that drafted the state constitution."


"III. Samuel Washington, b. Nov. 16, 1734; d. 1781, aged forty-seven years, in Berkeley Co., Va. Married, first, Jane Champe; second, Mildred Thornton; third, Lucy Chapman; fourth, Anne Steptoe.


Samuel Washington((4)) (Augustine((3)), Laurence((2)), John((1))), b. Nov. 10, 1734, third child of Mary Ball Washington; brother of George and Elizabeth, elder, and John Augustine, Charles, and Mildred, younger.


Married, first, Jane Champe, who died s. p.; second, Mildred Thornton, daughter of Col. John Thornton, and had children; third, Lucy Chapman, daughter of Nathaniel Chapman, Esq.; fourth, Anne Steptoe, of "Homing Hall," widow of Willoughby Allerton and daughter of Col. James Steptoe and Elizabeth Eskridge, his wife."


Samuel and Jane (Champe) Washington lived on the land devised him by his father, a large estate in that part of King George County known as "Chotank"; about the year 1768 he moved to what is now Jefferson County, Virginia (1863)West Virginia, and established an estate called "Harewood", where he died, in 1781, aged forty-seven.
