Lt. Richard CLARK

1760 - Mar 1784

ID Number: I89390

  • TITLE: Lt.
  • RESIDENCE: Caroline Co. VA and Louisville, KY
  • BIRTH: 1760, Caroline Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: Mar 1784, drowned crossing the White river, Falls of Ohio
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3320]
Father: John CLARK
Mother: Ann ROGERS

Notes

"RICHARD CLARK, Joined his brother George Rogers Clark at Kaskaskia in March, 1779. He was then in his nineteenth year, having been born in Caroline county, Virginia, in 1760. He served for a short time as a volunteer in Captain Robert Todd's company and was commissioned a lieutenant in June, 1779. He was one of the party that marched to the relief of Cahokia, in 1780, and also was in the campaign against the Indians about Peoria. He was stationed for some time at Fort Jefferson, but went to the falls of the Ohio in the summer of 1781, and the next year was with his brother in the campaign against the Indians. Lieutenant Richard Clark was allotted two thousand one hundred and fifty-six acres of land in Clark's Grant, Indiana, for his services in the Illinois campaign, being Nos. 15, 18, 191, 274 and part 160.

He lost his life in March, 1784, probably on Indiana soil. He started to make a journey on horse-back from the falls of the Ohio to Vincennes or possibly Kaskaskia. The strange part of the story is that he undertook this long and dangerous journey alone. There is but little wonder that he lost his life in the effort. The particulars are not known, but the probabilities are that he was drowned in trying to cross some stream. His horse, saddle-bags and some other things were found on the bank of the White river which is pretty clear evidence that he was not killed by the Indians as they would have taken the horse. The family long entertained the hope that he might not be dead, and the mystery and uncertainty added greatly to their distress. There is another tradition which names the Little Wabash as the river where his horse was found, but this is not probable as it is not likely he was aiming to go further than Vincennes."

  6.  Elizabeth VAWTER
Family 2 : Johanna VERNON
  1.  William VAWTER
  2.  Richard VAWTER

Notes

John Vawter served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Book - Gwathmey's Virginians in the Revolution, page 783 states he was a private 10th Virginia State Continental Line Regmt.

Culpeper Co. deed book G p 36-37. 11 May 1773 between John Reynolds, planter, of Brumfield parish in Culpeper Co. & John Vawter of the same parish and county, for 40 pounds Virginia money purchased 100 acres, lying in Culpeper in the great fork of the Rapid Ann River…. Corner Thomas Portors…to line of Kilbeys….containing all houses, out houses, buildings, gardens, orchards, fences, woods, meadows and feeding ways and all water ways. Signed John Reynolds. Wit: Rich'd Vawter, Thomas Porter, Joel Wilhoit.

Whether this is the same John or another of the name is yet unsure: It seems improbable that one man named John could be in two different states and own land at the same time in two places and serve in the Rev. war in two different states, especially since John4 (Richard3, John2, Barth1) is shown living in NC before 1775 when the war started.

John Vawter moved to Surry Co., NC (now Stokes Co.) and is found in the Surry-Wilkes Taxables 1771-1777. Listed Surry Tax List 1775 John Vawter with 300 Acres of land. He moved to Surry Co., NC in time to serve in that county for which service he received a land grant from Charles Bruce and James Hunter, auditors of the Salisbury District in June 1782. (Rev Army Accts, Vol. XII, p. 45, folio 4- Division of Archives & Records, Raleigh, NC)

John m. (1) Frankee Ward of Culpeper Co., VA. Franky (Ward) Vawter d. aft. 31 Mar 1791 (will) and bef. 7 Nov 1792 when John Vawter signed a deed on behalf of his minor children along with the other heirs of Jacob Ward in Culpeper Co. VA. Proof of his first marriage is found in the will of Frankey's father.

John Vawter then moved to Elbert Co., GA by 1801 as he is found in the Elbert Co. Tax list for that year. In Tax list for Elbert Co., GA 1806, John 100 Acres, John Jr. 50A. He died 1817 leaving a large estate and without a will. The inventory of his estate began in Jan 1818. Richard Johnston Vawter, son, who lived in Tenn. seemed to have charge of the estate and freed several slaves. The settlement of the estate covered a long period of about 20 years. It was noted in the settlement that he had slaves leased out in South Carolina.

Book-Early Families of the North Carolina counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service, compiled by James Hunter Chapter, DAR, Madison, NC 1977 gives many details about John. Page 126-27 submitted by a descendant, Mrs. Hazel McCandless, PO Box 366, Cushing, TX 74760. No mention of him is given in the book The Vawter Family in America by Grace Vawter Bicknell, pub. 1905, Hollenbeck Press, Indianapolis.

Census of John Vawter
1784-1787 Surry Co., NC John Vawter males, 1 age 21-60; females, 3 ages under 21-60 and 1 over 60. Assumption Frankey still alive 2 daughters.
1790 census Salisbury District, Surry Co., NC John Vawter (shown as Vanter) males 1 over 16 and 4 under 16. Females 4 total. Assumption Frankey is still alive, 4 sons and 3 daughters 1800 census Stokes Co., NC John Vawter males 1 over 45, 2 age 16-26 and 1under 10 (this is probably James son of Joanna) females 1 age 26-45 (Joanna) 2 age 10-16 and 2 under 10 (these are probably Joannas)
