Note*   Charles was born two years before Sara married Howard Shirer. It is rumored that Charles father was the Charles Buker shown living with the family in the 1870 census. At the time of Charles birth, Sarah was 20 and Charles was 15. It is doubtful he is the father. Since Charles Decatur Shirer has the middle name of Decatur, it is probably in reference to Decatur Buker. If he was Charles' grandfather then the most likely person to be Charles' father is Decatur's son, Charles W. Buker. He was 23 at that time and close in age to Sarah. He did not marry until 8 years later to a women 10 years his junior.

It should also be noted that Charles W. Buker was a carpenter and may have worked for the Shirers. Howard was a carpenter and carried on the family business. Charles may have worked for him and been able to help support and look after his son.

Also of note is the fact that Decatur Buker's brother Alpha, was the owner of the Hotel before Sarah's father Joseph bought it. The Charles Buker in the 1870 census being 9 years old may be the son of Alpha.
