Note*   The first marriage in Adams township was that of David Shirer and Lydia Gaumer. David and Lydia moved to Indiana about 1846. David changed the spelling of the family name to Shirar. This occured when they moved to Carroll Co., IN. His direct descendent Ara Shirer has letters between various relatives at the time this occurred. The letters make reference to the fact of the spelling change and state "they can change the spelling but they can't change the blood."

David is sometimes listed with the middle intial "L" but that has not been proven by primary sources. It could be that he was shown with his wife as David & L Shirer and the "L" was assumed to be his middle name instead of Lydia's initial.

He owned a large tract of land in section 16 of Adams township, part of the Shirer lands his father Valentine acquired very early in the history of the township. He later deeded this land to Royal Humphreys on 14 Aug 1828. He also deeded land to his brother Peter on 18 Jan 1838 in the NE quarter of section 25 of Adams township. In 1840 he inherited a portion of his father's estate as well as a share of his brother Jacob's estate. He disposed of all of this land before 1850 when he moved his family to Carroll Co., Indiana where he lived the rest of his life.

He also owned land in section 20 of Madison township on which he built a sawmill on the north branch of Symmes Creek with his brother Valentine. The dam from the sawmill still exists today on that land.

David retained the spelling Shirar and all of his descendants are identified as such. His brother Jacob and his brother Peter's wife Catherine are both buried with that spelling.

In 1829, David bought land in section 25, Adams township. This was the east half of the northeast quarter of the section. This land was part of his father's farm and next to land bought a few years earlier by his brother Jacob.

In 1831, David bought land in section 22, Madison township. This was the east half of the northeast quarter of the section which included the land where Prospect Church is located.
