MRS J. D. HANKS DEAD

After Untold Suffering She Passes

To her Home Beyond the

Grave

After months of indescribable suffering Mrs. J. D. Hanks died at her home in this village, Friday, October 23, 1914, at the advanced age of 84 years, 10 months and 27 days.

Mary C. Hanks was the daughter of George and Christina Adams and was born November 20, 1829. Her long life of over four-score and four years has been spent in Muskingum county near her native home. October 18, 1850, she was united in marriage to John D. Hanks and the posterity of this union was six children two of whom preceded her to the grave. The children living are Carson H. Hanks, who came to the home from Zanesville and who has been tenderly and devotedly caring for his parents for the past two years; Laura A. Horn, of Dresden; Homer L. Hanks, of Zanesville, and Wilbur C. Hanks, of Youngstown, Ohio. To these children Mrs. Hanks was a devoted and loving mother, caring for them with tender affection and deeply interested in their welfare. The same loving devotion imparted to her children was also bestowed upon her husband who also survives her and mourns his irreparable loss.

Mrs. Hanks in early life united with the M. E. church and remained a faithful member until her death. She was devoted to the work of the church and manifested much interest in the spiritual welfare of those around her as well as her own. Her daily walk portrayed christian character and gave to her confidence of her fellow workers in the cause of Christ. In her home and in the community in which she lived she gave words of cheering counsel and performed deeds of charity and love, thereby making strong the attachments of home and loved ones and friends and neighbors.

Besides her husband and four children the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. A. Bainter, of Zanesville, and one brother, M. V. Adams, of Chariton, Iowa. Six grandchildren and three great-grand-children also survive her.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday forenon at the family residence by Rev. E. V. Ault after which the remains were taken to the cemetery at the Bethel M. E. church for interment.
