Note*   Owen's birth is in doubt. The 1858 date is calculated from what is on his gravestone. The earlier date is taken from a record from the Newark Poor House where Owen and his brother Patrick were placed supposedly after their mother's death. the entry in the card file is as follows:

From the book "Records of Admissions, Discharges, Births and Deaths at Licking Co. Poor House, (Infirmary) 1838-72", Book One, page 160:
Owen Stanton/Standen age 1 1/2, date 1 Nov. 1855 by Moses Moore, Director, Owen was a pauper, aged 18 mos. and that he was a RESIDENT OF GUERNSEY Co., Ohio, in Newark Twp. six weeks, at the time of his entry. Bound to Ed Jones 4 April, 1861. Stanton is to receive 100 dollars extra from what the law requires.

The 1870 census has Owen, a fifteen year old, laboring in the fields and living with Nathan English and his wife Margaret. Owen's mother died shortly before or after his father left to serve in the Civil War and he and his brother were placed with local families willing to take them in. It is possible that his brother August died during birth as there are no records to support him being adopted or placed in a foster home after his mother's death.

Her maiden name is not known and did not appear to be English as there is no Eizabeth English in the area.
Occupation*   Railroad
Birth* 1853 or 12 August 1858  PA, The obituary and death certificate say the date of birth is 12 Aug 1858 but the records for the county poor house where he was placed give his birth as 1853. The 1870 census gives his age as 15 suggesting 1860. The 1880 and subsequent census records point to the 1858 date.1
