News/Obit* 19 October 1909  LYMAN GAUMER DEAD

Lyman Gaumer, one of the oldest citizens in Muskingum County died last Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs Mary E Browning in this village. The deceased was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Gaumer and was born in Adams Township near Adamsville 20 February 1819. His early life was spent on the farm but when reaching manhood he learned the carpenter trade and worked at that business nearly all his life. While yet a young man he was united in marriage to Mary A McClanahan and to this union were born nine children. Five son and four daughters. Three sons and three daughters preceded him to the grave, and only two sons and one daughter are left to mourn the departure of their father. The surviving children are Mrs Mary E Browning of this village, W H Gaumer of Sonora RFD #1 and G M Gaumer of Glenora, West Virginia. Besides the children surviving, two sisters and one brother are also left to mourn their loss. They are Aunt Rachel Bell of Monroe Township, Mrs Malinda Werts of Coshocton and Samuel Gaumer of Illinois. Thirty grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren are also of the surviving posterity of the departed one. With the exception of two years, when a resident of Hocking County, this state, Mr Gaumer has spent his long life in and near Adamsville. The past few years he has lived with his daughter, Mrs Browning in this village and she cared for him with the most tender affection. For more than a year he has been confined to his home and much of that time in bed. Prior to this close confinement he could frequently be seen loitering along the streets with crutch and crane or two canes and his aged form with slow and careful tread under a lasting impression upon the active youth who delighted at all times to extend to him a helping hand. He was a lover of nature and the pure air and warm Sunshine and the valleys and hills dressed in verdant green drew him to them and no doubt contributed to the vitality which gave him his long life. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church having united with that denomination many years ago. Funeral services were conducted Friday forenoon by Rev J D Nulton at the Baptist Church and interment was made in the cemetery at that place.
