Child  1. James Donald Shirer b. 28 Jan 1909, d. 13 Jul 1983

Occupation*   Salesman
Note*   Roy was born in Adamsville, OH and moved to Newark with as a young man. He attended high school in Adamsville and was a member of the city band in Newark. After marrying Elta Stanton, a local piano teacher, the couple lost a child during pregnancy. They tried again and James Donald was the result. They did not have any other children.

When Don was about 5 years old, the family moved to Akron. Roy tried working as a door to door salesman for Hoover but a friend got him a job in Cleveland with an awning company. He moved the family again to the east side of Cleveland in the Hough area. He would later change jobs and for a long time he was a rug salesman for the May Co. About this time they moved again to an apartment on Clifton Ave in Lakewood and then again to an apartment across from the old Lakewood High School.

They would eventually rent a house on Olive Ave in Lakewood and would later purchase it which the 1930 census shows. Roy would work again for the awning company but would retire from the Republic Steel Corp. where he worked as a mail clerk.

In their later years, Roy and Elta sold their home and moved in with Donald and family at their home in Olmsted Falls, OH. Both lived there until their deaths. Roy died 50 years to the day after his brother Frank's death. He and Elta are buried in Sunset Memorial Park in North Olmsted, OH.

News/Obit 15 February 1908  Weddings

SHIRER_STANTON

One of the prettiest weddings of the midwinter season took place on Wednesday evening at the Second Presbyterian church, when the accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Stanton, Elta Grace, was united in marriage to Mr. Roy Shirer by Rev. T. A. Cosgrove, the impressive ring ceremony being used. They were attended by Miss Marcia Shirer and Mr. Wilbur Stanton.

The bride was prettily dressed in white mohair and wore a white picture hat. Miss Shirer was attired in a charming gown of white. After the ceremony and congratulations, the young couple departed for their new home on Cedar Street, where a course supper was served to the immediate family. Mrs. Shirer has devoted her time to the study of music and was one of Newark's most successful teachers. Mr. Shirer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Shirer of Twelfth street, and one of Grigg's most valued employes. The young couple have a host of friends who extend congratulations.
