NEWARK -- A funeral service for Esther Retherford, 87, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service with the Rev. Miriam Schreck and the Rev. Richard Burgie officiating. A graveside interment service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Norwich Cemetery, Norwich.



Mrs. Retherford, a homemaker, died Jan. 5, 2004, at the Heritage Unit at Newark Healthcare Centre. She was born May 19, 1916, in Muskingum County, to the late Herbert and Nora Mock Bebout. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the Newark Grange 1004 and the Rebecca Lodge. She was active in Girl Scouts, being a leader for 18 years, had trained other Girl Scout leaders and was a Day Camp director.



Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Michael Barclay of Newark; four grandchildren, Robert (Karen) Barclay of Heath, Jeff (Tricia) Barclay of Newark, David Hummel of Florida and James Hummel of Newark; six great-grandchildren, Dustin, Kendall, Sharree and Kara Barclay, Branden and Mandy Hummel.



In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Retherford, who died October 1990; a daughter, Geraldine Hummel; and two brothers.



Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 59 N. Fifth St.
