Note*   Helen was Christened Hilena Adams at New Jerusalem Church in Lovettsville, Loudoun Co., VA. It is unknown whether she was born there but seeing the difficulty in travel in those days it is doubtful her parents would have travelled from Ohio to Virginia for a christening with a new born baby. New Hope Lutheran was established in 1811, a church her family would be members of. If they were living in Muskingum Co. at that time there would have been no reason to return to Virginia. Therefore it is assumed she was born in Loudoun Co. and that the family actually moved back to Ohio after the winter of 1815, probably spring of 1816 rather than the suggested date of 1814.

One of the Oldest Citizens of the
County Passes
Away

Early last Wednesday morning occurred the death of Mrs. Helen Bowden, one of the oldest residents of Adamsville and Muskingum county. Her death took place at her home after a prolonged illness from dropsy and other diseases common to one of her advanced years.

Mrs. Helen Bowden was the daughter of George P. Adams and was born in Loudon county, Virginia, August 9, 1814. When only a small child she came to Salem township with her parents. On the 24th day of April 1833 she was married to Daniel Bowden and the posterity from this union were eleven children. Four of these children preceded their mother to the grave. The seven children living are Mrs. Susan Hanks, of Ottowa, Kansas; Mrs. Malinda Winn, of Arthur, Ill.; Mrs. Rose Mock, Mrs. Harriet Hardy, John Bowden and Mrs. Matilda Davis, of Norwich; and Alvin D. Bowden of Gilbert. Besides the children the deceased is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Martha Adams, of Iowa; George P. Adams, Mrs. J. D. Hanks and Mrs. J. A. Bainter of this place; and Mrs. Sarah Powelson, of Burnside, Ill. There are also forty seven grandchildren surviving the departed woman.

Mrs. Bowden's husband died about seventeen years ago, and two years afterward she moved to Adamsville where she has since resided. She was well known and took an active interest in the affairs of the community in which she lived. She was one of the pioneer settlers of Salem township and witnessed many of the changes which civilization has made in this part of the county.

When a young woman she united with the church and continued her membership as long as she lived.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Bethel M. E. church by Rev. W. S. Nicholson and her remains were intered in the cemetery at that place.

Appeared in the Adamsville Register, 23 Feb 1904

(ed: Helen's father was George W. Adams not George P. Adams.)
