"Major William Humphrey was an officer in the Revolutionary War. Three of his children, Sally, William and Squire left Rhode Island to claim the land along with spouses and children around 1813. They were less than thrilled with the land were willing to forfeit them rather than pay the taxes, Major William back in RI, as sick as he was (stomach distress, took paregoric for it) paid the taxes because he wanted to keep the land."

"It was family understanding that the military lands that is referred to in the letters from Lydia to her children is remuneration to Major William for his service in the Revolutionary War."

"The major was in battle under Benedict Arnold at Montreal and was captured and in prison for a time."

"After 19 years of marriage William and Lydia found their faith in Christ together. Their faith was very important to them. On their burial monument Major William is referred to as Deacon William. He is buried in the Humphrey Cemetery in Little Compton, RI, a quarter acre of 35 graves, surrounded by a wall of granite blocks. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church."

"Enclosed in the letter (dated October the 5th, 1832) to her (Lydia's) children after Major William's death 'Your good father has given his Beloved Daughter Sallly Remington four hundred dollars, to his Beloved Son William Humphrey, Six Hundred dollars, to his Beloved Son Squire Humphrey one Hundred dollars, to his Beloved Son Thomas J. Humphrey two Hundred dollars.'"
