News/Obit* 15 January 1964  Obituary, Funeral services were held Thursday at Milwaukee for Maj. Herbert A. Werts, 45, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Werts of Canton who died of cancer at the San Antonio verterans Hospital Jan. 6 after a lengthly illness. Maj. Werts was born at Canton Jan. 7, 1919, and was a graduate of Cameron high School and the University of Wisconsin agriculture school before entering service in 1940. During his years of service, rising from the rank of private to major in the air force when he was given a medical retirement in 1963. Maj. Werts had served as an aircraft mechanic instructor and pilot instructor and in biological warfare. During World War II he was a B-29 bomber pilot and flew several missions over Japan, and he had flown nearly every type of propeller driven aircraft during his career. His last active assignment was at Taranton, Italy, where he was chief controller of missile instillations. Survivors include his widow, Jean, who he married July 4, 1947 in Milwaukee; one son, Brent J., and two daughters, Wendy, 10, and Lorrie 4 and his parents. There are also a brother, Glenn of Canton, and a sister, Mrs. Robert Noonan of Marinette.
