WILLIAM EDWARDS DEAD
Kifelong Resident of Adams Town-
ship Died Thursday Afternoon
at Home of Daughter in
Zanesville

William Edwards, a lifelong resident of Adams township, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. S. Knicely, in Zanesville, Thursday afternoon, November 2, 1916, of a complication of diseases due to his advanced age. He had been in failing health for several months and a few weeks ago he and his wife went to Newark for a visit with their two sons. Continued failing health caused Mr. Edwards and wife to come to the home of their daughter about two weeks ago, but the decline continued and the end soon followed.

William Edwards was the son of Mordecai and Phebe Edwards and was born on the farm now known as the Edwards estate February 24, 1839. His parents were pioneer settlers of Adams township and upon him fell many of the pleasant adventures and excitements of early pioneer life, together with hardships and disadvantages encountered by the early settlers. In 1860 he married Miss Caroline Schroyer who survives him and now mourns the death of the one who has been her companion for over a half a century. To this union seven children were born, three sons and four daughters. One son and one daughter died of diptheria diring an epedemic of that dread disease. Another daugter died in childhood.

The children living are Mrs. Rose Lacey, of Meriden, Kansas; George and Orn Edwards, of Newark, Ohio, and Mrs. Emma Knicely, of Zanesville. All were present ast the funeral.

William Edwards was one of the best known farmers of Adams township. He lived close to nature and enjoyed its associations. He also enjoyed the associations of his neighbors and was active in any movement which he believed beneficial. He was a leading member of the Fairview M. E. church and had the confidence and good will of his fellow worshipers.

He was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion and later became an active member of the G.A.R. He was also a member of Hubbard lodge F. & A.M. of this village.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Fairview church by Rev. Luther Timberlake, of Zanesville, assisted by the pastor, Rev. A. W. Manning and District Superintendent Rev. J. M. Shafer. The funeral was largely attended and many people were unable to get into the church. His two sons, son-in-law, two grandsons and one grandson by marriage were the pall bearers. At the close of the service the remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery which is located on an eminece overlooking the Edwards Estate, the home where his entire earthly pilgrimage was made.

The Masonic lodge attended in a body and gave a beautiful and impressive service at the funeral.

Undertaker H. E. Shirer had charge of the burial.

Appeared in the Adamsville Register, November 1916
