Biography* 4 March 1926  Biography, Has Served Church as Sexton for Over Half Century

Jacob Henry Bainter of Adamsville has the distinction of having been custodian of the New Hope Lutheran church for over half a century, and is still performing the work with the same efficiency he did fifty years ago. His remuneration for more than half this time was only $15.00 a year and for the other half from $20.00 to $40.00 a year.

New Hope church is one of the oldest religious societies in Muskingum county, having been organized in 1811, more than twenty years before the founding of the village of Adamsville which is two miles west. The first church building was erected in 1811, and was a log structure about 24 by 36 feet with two windows on each side. The log building gave way to a plain brick structure 36 by 48 feet in 1838.

The building of which Mr. Bainter has been care-taker for more than half a century took the place of the brick church in the year 1870. It is a massive frame structure 43 by 70 feet and before its re-arrangement in the interior would seat about 700 people. It stands upon an eminence overlooking the beautiful country cemetery in connection with it, and surrounded by native forest and trees and trees of evergreen which give it a sacred appearance so impressive to those who assemble there to worship.

When Mr. Bainter became custodian of the church in 1876, Rev. John Weber was the pastor and continued his labors in the church until 1888. The other ministers who have come and gone since Mr. Bainter’s work commenced are: Rev. H. K. Gibhart, Rev. C. L. V. Dozer, Rev. H. H. Bashman, Rev. N. N. Harter, Rev. J. J. S. Rumbarger, Rev. I. R. Ladd, Rev. L. S. Miller and the present pastor Rv. J. D. F. Bowersox.

During the fifty years of Mr. Bainter’s faithful service the church has twice been remodeled, in 1892 and again in 1908. When the last repairs were made the chancel end was changed by making a small room on each side, and thus reducing the seating capacity to about 600.

Mr. Bainter belongs to one of the pioneer families of Muskingum county. His natal year is 1847. Until a few years ago he owned a fine farm where he reared his family near the church he loved so well. When he sold his farm he moved to Adamsville but still continues his work in caring for the church. Although now over 79 years of age, he answers the call of the church at every service, and when the roads are too bad for vehicles he goes to his work on foot. To him it is a labor of love – love for the God he worships and for his fellowmen.
