Name Variation   Jacob Shirer
Note*   Jacob was born in Berks Co. PA. He shows up there in the Delong's Reformed Church birth and baptism records. His first name is identified there as John following the German naming convention. It might have originally been Johann but John is what was listed. All other records list him as Jacob.

From the Delong's Reformed Church, Bowers, Maxatawny Twp. PA.:

John Jacob Scheurer son of Valentine and Elizabeth, born November 15, 1786, baptized January 28, 1787. Sponsors: Jacob Haag and Margaret.

Jacob is buried in New Hope next to an Eliza Shirer d. 7/22/1861 age 5 years and 10 days, daughter of Jacob and A.M. Shirer. That Jacob is not a son of Jacob as he and Catherine Helwig never had children. Jacob seems to have been married befoe he married Catherine. The census lists him with a wife and two daughters in 1820.

Jacob's name is also spelled Shirrar on his tombstone. Catherine remarried after Jacob's death to Jacob Frederick Zimmer.

Jacob owned land in Highland township and is found there in the 1820 Federal Census and 1825 tax records. By the next census, he is no longer in Highland township but there is a male 40-50 living with Valentine. This is probably Jacob as he is found in Adams township in 1840 and inherited his father's farm.

From the will of Jacob Shirer, which was filed in Muskingum County Probate Court in 1843, he left his estate to his wife, Catharine, until her death, then it was to go to his brothers; Peter Shirer, David Shirer, and Valentine Shirer; to his sisters; Elizabeth Stoner, Mary Cline, Catharine Brown and Hannah Munrow also, to his niece Eunice, if she remained living with his widow.

In 1826, Jacob owned land in sections 16 and 25 in Adams township. This included the land that was his father's farm. It included the southeast quarter of section 25 and the southeast quarter of section 16 for a total of 320 acres.
