'Johann Jacob was one of the "Natives & late inhabitants of the Palatinate upon the Rhine & places adjacent", when he boarded a small merchant ship the bilander "London", on his way to America. A French Huguenot, he was born about 1715, possibly in Alsace-Lorraine, a region whose control shifted back & forth between the Germans & the French for many years but was under German control in the years around 1715. On the 10th of Jan., 1739, Jacob & 15 other heads of families or single men over 16 signed, in Pennsylvania an Oath of Allegiance to the King of Great Britain, George I or II. Jacob proved his literacy by signing his own name. He soon traveled the route of many German immigrants of the time, across southern Pa, where the land was already taken, to the Allegheny mtns, where the tide of migrants was turned south into the valley of the Shenandoah. By 1840 he & his wife, who one bit of family tradition says was a 16 yr old girl on the ship with whom he fell in love, had established a homestead near Mountain Fall, about 15 miles sw of Winchester, Frederick Co, Va, where they lived the rest of their lives. Her name is not known. (Per Stockman Family Newsletter Sept 1993 pgs 38-45.)'2
