Note*   John was born in a small town called Gajdel in what was then the county of Nyitra in Hungary. Today that area is part of Slovakia. The county was also know as Nitrafoze or in Slavic, Nyitra Vármegyéi. The town's name was spelled Gaidel or Gajdell or Gajdel. His childhood was spent in that country which saw it's borders change through many political upheavals. It was right before World War I when Germany's weight was being pressed against this land and young men were being drafted into military service. John's father did not want his son to serve in a war they did not believe in so they forged papers and John left the country under an assumed name.

In 1910 the town of Gajdel was 4 km north of Nemet Prona, a considrable sized town in Nyitra. Today the same town is named Nitrianske Pravno and can be found on most maps. 4 km north of the town lies a village called Kl'acno which is the Slavic name for Gajdel. It is about 70 km north east of Nitra, the county seat or 88.5 miles NE of Bratislava. The map coordinates are Lat 48.91.67 Long 18.66.67. Click here for present day map

John left Europe on 23 Mar 1912 aboard the S.S. Pennsylvania sailing from Hamburg, Germany. His manifest record aboard that ship lists his father as Carl Nelischer. The person who sponsored him was listed as an aquaintence, Mathias Petrus whose address is listed as the Fisher Hotel , Preston KS. He arrived in New York's Ellis Island on 7 Apr 1912. John has two records in the manifest, one of which is crossed out. This is because during the voyage, he was for some reason upgraded from Steerage to third class.

It is unknon how he ultimately settled in Canton, Ohio, but it was there he met and married Verna Poharesky. They became charter members of St. Peter's Catholic church. They lived in the N.E. section of downtown Canton for many years. When the neighbor hood started getting run down, their sons, Peter and John arranged for them to buy a small basement home in northeast Canton where they built a one story home on the basment foundation. Here they lived the remainder of their lives and where his grandaughter Cheryl and her husband Dennis Shirer, lived for many years after John's death, his wife having died a few years prior to his.

John had been a bricklayer all his life and it was this trade that taught his son Peter the fundamentals he would later utilize as a home builder. John had once taken a job with Timken Steel repairing the brick lined kilns but to do this job, he had to lie on his back while others pushed him in backwards into the kilns which were still very hot. This lasted a few days and John swore he would never be subjected to such conditions again.

He would later assist Peter in doing the brickwork on his new home in Canton South. John enjoyed gardening and baking and was known for his poppyseed streudel which he shared with his family and friends. He kept a small garden in his backyard and worked in it until a year before his death. He also loved his Rolling Rock beer and there was always a case of Rolling rock in the downstairs fridge along with a case of Orange Crush.

John and Verna are buried together in St. Peter's Cemetery on Cleveland Ave. NW in Canton Ohio.
