FORT WAYNE – A small Iowa community pulled together to raise money to send the father of 9-year-old Aliahna Marie Maroney Lemmon to Fort Wayne to bury his daughter.

Dawayne Maroney of Centerville, Iowa, declined comment to The Journal Gazette on Wednesday through Appanoose County Sheriff Gary Anderson.

Anderson, however, said Maroney was in the process of making arrangements to get to Fort Wayne and might have left as early as Wednesday night.

Centerville is the county seat and has about 6,000 people, Anderson said.

The sheriff said he gave money out of his pocket, and reserve deputies also donated money, to help get Maroney to Indiana. Other donations from the community came in to provide Maroney with money to eat and for other expenses while in Fort Wayne, the sheriff said.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Anderson said. “He needs to be with his daughter. As tragic as it is, he just needs to have some final closure.”

Maroney told The Associated Press he hadn’t recently talked with Aliahna or her mother because they frequently changed their phone number.

Maroney said he knew the man accused of killing his daughter, 39-year-old Michael Plumadore, through his daughter’s mother, Tarah Souders.

Maroney said he trusted Plumadore, according to The Associated Press.

Plumadore, 39, had been watching the girls for a week at his home in the Northway mobile home park near Diebold Road and North Clinton Street while Souders recovered from the flu and because her husband works nights and sleeps during the day, police said.

Plumadore told police Monday night where to find Aliahna’s remains. Plumadore had struck the girl in the head with a brick multiple times and dismembered her body with a hacksaw, court records said.

Acting on what Plumadore told them, police went to two locations – a freezer in the mobile home where he was living and a trash bin at a convenience store about a mile away, court records said.

An autopsy of Aliahna’s remains was completed Wednesday at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center, and the official cause of death is pending until microscopic findings are examined further and toxicology test results are in, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said.

People wishing to donate to the Aliahna Lemmon Benefit Fund can do so at Salin Bank in Fort Wayne, an employee said Wednesday.

The bank has three locations in the city – 110 W. Main St., 6433 E. State Blvd., and inside the Kroger grocery store at 601 E. Dupont Road.
